Let’s dive into this amazing chat we had with her!

How did you get started in the industry, and what were some of the challenges you faced along the way?

I grew up very shy and introverted and was also bullied at my school for being black/mixed race. I felt very uncomfortable in my own skin. I would express myself by putting on dance and improv shows in my basement for my parents. They noticed that I came out of my shell when I would perform so they enrolled me in dance classes and beauty pageants. Being on stage, I felt like I had the permission to speak and fully express myself. The stage felt like home. When I was nine I attended a model/talent convention in NYC called the “International Model and Talent Association” (IMTA), which opened up my eyes up to the possibilities of being an actor and model. I then went on to auditioning for film and television roles. My mother did not fully believe in me and my acting skills so when the phone rang that I booked my first major TV commercial for “Post Golden Raisin Crisp” cereal, she thought they called for the wrong person. I was hurt but allowed that pain to motivate me, even more, to succeed in whatever I set my mind to. Being on set for that project was also the moment I knew that acting was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I felt happiest on set.
