As black women, we have all had similar experiences that can inform how we relate to each other. However, without making assumptions, I would like to know what it was like for you being a black woman working in corporate America.
Being a Black woman working in corporate America was nothing new because I was always (one of) the only Black girl in my school classes growing up. Corporate America still came with a shock because of the amount of politics and truly finding out that you indeed have to work twice as hard to be half as good. I never felt “too” secure and always had to show and communicate my value. It always felt as though at any moment the flip could be switched, and it was especially hard never seeing anyone who looked like me in an executive role. Thankfully one of my gifts is building relationships so I’ve formed many invaluable relationships that helped with the occasional feelings of being on an island.
What does a corporate digital marketer do? Was it fulfilling?
A digital marketer, in my capacity, was responsible for creating and executing marketing plans for clients. I was good at my role, but I wasn’t fulfilled because I didn’t relate to the why. Having a greater purpose and connecting to it became more important to me by the day instead of just chasing career advancement and money.
