Get To Know Author Latoya Roberts

We highlight novelist, LaToya Roberts, author of “Victim Slayer”. In addition to being a successful author, Roberts is also a mom, wife, registered nurse, minister, inspirational speaker, and life coach. She wrote Victim Slayer to inspire and encourage victims by educating them on changing their mindset. Roberts explained she chose the title, based on two words, victim and slay. Victim – referring to a person that is or has been harmed, while slay means to kill something in a violent way. In essence, the title means killing the victim mentality by changing your mindset.

When operating through a victim lens you cannot see beyond the hurt and pain. It is important to know that your pain nor trauma defines you. It is a normal process to allow yourself time to experience the pain and/or grief. However, it is equally important to not remain in that space. Holding onto pain can stunt your personal and professional growth. It is important that this does not go unnoticed or misunderstood.

Roberts lists Chapter 15 as her favorite because it covers the topic of freedom. She describes how trauma can result in low self-esteem, self-image, bitterness, mistrust, and anger. It can result in negative behaviors such as chemical or alcohol use and abuse. Roberts also discusses forgiveness and how holding onto hurt and pain can manifest into physical ailments. She shares how her spiritual journey began at an early age and how intertwined with her healing her relationship with God strengthened.

Important takeaways:

1. Accept you have things you need to work on. Change begins in your mind, then spreads to your heart.

2. Ask God to help you. It is just that simple, start to pray!

3. Forgive yourself for staying stuck in a victim mindset.

4. Do not beat yourself up, forgive yourself and move on.

5. Forgive anyone who caused your trauma.

6. Forgive those who may not have believed you, who has betrayed you, made you feel unheard or did not support you.

Always remember: Life happens. There is freedom in forgiveness. Your trauma does not define you. Stay positive. And believe in yourself.
