What does Black excellence mean to you?
Black excellence is a mindset. It is setting a standard of operating at a heightened level to achieve set goals and advance the Black community. It is persevering past the obstacles you see to attain the dreams you can not see.
How did the birth of We Care Rx Pharmacy come about?
We Care Rx Pharmacy was born, in midst of pain, at one of my lowest points where I lost everything and had to start over from square one. In 2016, I closed a pharmacy that I opened in partnership with a fellow pharmacist. This was devastating because the vision was given to me by God. I was forced to start over and God revealed to me that the vision never included a partnership. At that point, We Care Rx Pharmacy was born because God cares, and I care.
Can you share what your journey has looked like to date?
My journey is composed of highs and lows. I have experienced devastating setbacks such as losing my brother, and business setbacks that have caused me to have to regroup and start over. Amid starting over I realized the setback was a detour for God to reposition and redirect my path.
Growing up, did you always want to be a pharmacist?
I was introduced to the profession of pharmacy in the 11th grade by my high school guidance counselor, Mrs. Sanford. After spending a summer interning at Baylor College of Medicine in their Pharmacology lab, my love for pharmacy was cultivated.
Who or what inspired you to become a pharmacist?
My passion for pharmacy was cultivated at Baylor College of Medicine in their Pharmacology laboratory. In this lab, we were studying the pharmacokinetic properties of various drugs under certain environmental conditions. I was intrigued by the chemical reaction of the drugs due to chemical manipulation, changing the drugs medium, or the introduction of another chemical.
Any major plans for the new year?
We Care Rx is walking into the new year with a 2nd brick and mortar location here in Houston and a new foundation, The Nicole Leonard Foundation, which is a foundation I started to help provide scholarships, college tours, and career-driven site visits to minority students looking to study medicine. So, for the New Year, my plans are to work on increasing our scope of practice at We Care Rx and building on extending our services across the United States, becoming a household favorite. Also, continuing to advocate for our community and future generations.
