Chi Ilochi is a 21-year-old Nigerian American fashion stylist based in Pittsburgh, PA. Her company “StylingByChi” was created to heal, inspire and share insight through her life and her zeal for style and fashion. Chi has styled for Reebok, TJ Brown from the Netflix series “The Get Down” and New York Fashion Week to name a few. She has also taken the opportunity and initiative to style and provide free clothing to those who are mentally and physically ill, and at risk in different communities. Chi believes it is her duty to share the power of overcoming through her gifts in fashion and style.
Though the young stylist has a busy schedule, we were able touch base with her and uncover more about who she is and what her life is like as a young creative!
What seasons of the year are your favorite to create styles for?
My favorite season to create styles for is Autumn. I love being able to mix the end of summer clothing with fall clothing to create a “Wow” look. Autumn is also a time when the weather is just right, and the fall leaves and changing trees add so much pizazz to a client’s look.
How do you get out of a creative block?
I usually get out of creative blocks by honoring my inability to create. Sometimes a creative block simply means you need to rest, so I’ve learned to do so and go back to creating when it feels right.
Who is the person you want to style the most and why?
I would love to style Issa Rae. I am inspired by her drive, creativity, and personality. I think styling her would be a great experience and we could make magic together.
How do you think your creativity can impact others?
I think my creativity can impact others to follow their hearts, dreams, and to never give up no matter how hard or lonely the journey may be. I think my creativity can impact others by inspiring them to let the world experience their greatness.
Do you feel there is a lack of support for Black Designers in the fashion world?
I do feel like there is a lack of support for Black Designers in the fashion world, but I’ve been seeing improvements. I’ve been seeing directories for Black Designers, and many people support them by purchasing their pieces whether that be designers like Pyer Moss, and Romeo Hunte or small designers like Brea Holmes and Jada Ci.
Tell me about the projects you’re most proud of and why. What was your role?
I am most proud of styling and working with the lovely Natalie Lacek, Julia Kirby, and Bella Diaz for a vintage inspired project. It was so fun working with such talent and being able to build off of what they individually brought to the table.
Great designers love to get feedback on their work, how do you deal with feedback?
I think feedback is imperative for creatives, because there is always room for improvement. When receiving feedback, I always keep in mind the source and make it appoint to use discernment. If the feedback is constructive, I receive it and make the necessary changes to improve, if the feedback is destructive, I tune it out haha.
Chi Ilochi is quite an inspiration to all young creatives and has only just begun in her journey with fashion and styling.
