For many people, trauma leaves behind wounds that cannot always be seen. For Istasia Henderson, those wounds became the catalyst for a mission that is changing lives. As the Founder and Executive Director of Beaute for Ashes Foundation, Henderson has transformed her own journey of survival, healing, and self-discovery into a powerful movement dedicated to restoring hope for individuals navigating trauma, grief, domestic violence, and life-altering circumstances. After surviving a devastating burn accident more than two decades ago, Henderson faced years of emotional challenges, self-doubt, and questions about her worth. Today, she stands as a testament to resilience, using her story to remind others that scars—both visible and invisible—do not define a person’s future. Through faith, compassion, and a commitment to holistic healing, Beaute for Ashes Foundation continues to create safe spaces where survivors can reclaim their identity, rebuild confidence, and discover purpose beyond their pain.
FEMI: The name Beaute for Ashes carries a powerful message of transformation. What inspired you to create the foundation, and how has your personal journey influenced the organization’s mission?
Istasia Henderson: The Beaute for Ashes Foundation was born from my own journey of pain, healing, and restoration. Over 20 years ago, I survived a life-altering burn accident that left me physically and emotionally scarred. For many years, I struggled with depression, low self-esteem, and accepting the reflection I saw in the mirror. I felt broken and questioned my worth because of the scars I carried. However, through faith, perseverance, and healing, I began to understand that my scars were not symbols of defeat—they were evidence of survival. The name “Beaute for Ashes” comes from the belief that God can transform our deepest pain into purpose. What once felt like ashes in my life became the foundation for helping others find hope. My personal journey directly influences our mission. We serve individuals who have experienced trauma, grief, domestic violence, and other life challenges by providing support, encouragement, resources, and a safe space for healing. I know firsthand what it feels like to struggle in silence, and I created this foundation so that others would know they are not alone and that healing is possible.
FEMI: Many individuals struggle with reclaiming their identity after experiencing trauma. In your experience, what are some of the most important steps in helping survivors rebuild confidence, self-worth, and hope?
Istasia Henderson: One of the most important steps is helping survivors understand that what happened to them does not define who they are. Trauma can cause people to lose sight of their value and identity, but healing begins when they recognize their worth beyond their circumstances. I believe rebuilding confidence starts with creating a supportive environment where survivors feel seen, heard, and validated. Encouraging them to share their stories without judgment can be incredibly powerful. Faith, counseling, mentorship, and community support also play a major role in the healing process. Another important step is helping survivors celebrate small victories. Healing is not always a straight path, and every step forward deserves recognition. Through our work, we focus on empowering individuals to rediscover their strengths, set goals, and believe that their future can be greater than their past.
FEMI: As a leader in the trauma-informed care space, what gaps do you believe currently exist in how communities support individuals recovering from emotional trauma, grief, or domestic violence?
Istasia Henderson: One of the biggest gaps is access to ongoing support after the immediate crisis has passed. Many individuals receive temporary assistance, but long-term healing requires continuous emotional, mental, and practical support. Another challenge is the stigma surrounding trauma and mental health. Many survivors feel ashamed, isolated, or afraid to ask for help because they fear being judged or misunderstood. Communities need to create more safe spaces where people can openly discuss their experiences without fear. There is also a need for more holistic approaches to healing. Recovery is not just about addressing immediate needs; it involves emotional wellness, mental health support, spiritual growth, financial stability, and rebuilding confidence. When communities focus on the whole person, healing becomes more sustainable and transformative.
FEMI: Beaute for Ashes Foundation focuses on holistic healing and restoration. Can you share a success story or transformative moment that reminds you why this work is so important?
Istasia Henderson: One of the most impactful moments in my journey involved a woman who was struggling with severe emotional trauma and suicidal thoughts. The pain she was carrying had become so overwhelming that she no longer wanted to live. I spent time counseling her, listening to her story, encouraging her, and helping her see that her life still had value and purpose. Through consistent support, compassion, and faith-based encouragement, she began to see hope where she once saw hopelessness. Watching her move from a place of despair to a place of healing was incredibly powerful. It reminded me that sometimes people simply need someone willing to stand beside them during their darkest moments. Knowing that she chose life and began moving toward healing reaffirmed why this work is so important. It is a reminder that even one conversation can change the trajectory of someone’s life.
FEMI: Looking ahead, what is your vision for Beaute for Ashes Foundation, and what legacy do you hope to leave for future generations of survivors seeking healing and empowerment?
Istasia Henderson: My vision is to expand the reach of the Beaute for Ashes Foundation so that we can serve more individuals and families affected by trauma, grief, domestic violence, and life-altering circumstances. I want to develop programs, workshops, support groups, and community initiatives that provide practical resources while promoting emotional and spiritual healing. I also hope to create a lasting network of survivors who become advocates and mentors for others. There is incredible power in people who have overcome adversity reaching back and helping someone else through their journey. The legacy I hope to leave is one of hope, resilience, and transformation. I want future generations to know that their scars—whether visible or invisible—do not diminish their value. My goal is for survivors to recognize their strength, embrace their healing journey, and understand that their story has the power to inspire and uplift others. If Beaute for Ashes can help even one person move from surviving to thriving, then we are fulfilling our purpose.
As Beaute for Ashes Foundation continues to grow, Henderson’s vision extends far beyond providing immediate support. She is building a legacy rooted in empowerment, community, and transformation—one where survivors become advocates, mentors, and sources of hope for others walking similar paths. Her message is both simple and profound: healing is possible, and every story has value. By addressing the emotional, mental, spiritual, and practical needs of those affected by trauma, Henderson is proving that restoration is not only attainable, but life-changing. Through her leadership, countless individuals are learning that what once felt like ashes can become the foundation for a future filled with purpose, strength, and renewed hope.
