Roderick Batson is not a conventional entrepreneur. As the owner of seven companies, he has built a business portfolio rooted in purpose, with four of those ventures intentionally designed to create meaningful opportunities for individuals with special needs. His work extends far beyond employment. Batson’s companies focus on teaching practical life skills, strengthening confidence, and ensuring that people who are often overlooked feel seen, valued, and heard. Through hands-on training in areas like communication and marketing, employees gain tools that support long-term independence. These roles also place individuals directly in front of customers, allowing them to build real-world experience and authentic connections, something that remains rare within disability-centered employment spaces.

Batson’s commitment to the special needs community is deeply personal. His passion was shaped by his cousin, who lived with disabilities and passed away during the pandemic. Watching his cousin succeed at tasks others doubted he could accomplish reshaped how Batson understood ability and potential. That lived experience continues to drive his mission today, fueling his determination to serve those often underestimated and to provide lifelong skills that create lasting impact well beyond the workplace.
That mission came full circle during a moment that still stays with him. When Santiago quietly said, “I finally feel included,” the weight of that statement landed deeply. It affirmed exactly why this work matters. “That’s the best feeling,” Batson says. “That’s the reason I chose this line of work. There is a place for everyone.” Over time, he noticed that individuals facing challenges similar to Santiago’s were routinely denied opportunities they deserved. Instead of accepting that reality, he made the decision to change it.
Helping Heroes Staffing was built on the belief that inclusion should never be an afterthought. The goal was not simply to place people in jobs, but to prepare them for real-world independence. To support that vision, Batson partnered with The HUB Houston, which plays a critical role in training employees in soft skills, communication, and confidence building. These lessons are essential, especially since many employees interact directly with customers, introducing products and engaging the public. Communication is not a secondary skill in these roles. It is foundational.
Batson was intentional about placing his employees in customer-facing positions. “In America, you have to show people that you can make them money,” he says. He never wanted charity or sympathy attached to his businesses. He wanted his employees measured by performance, just like anyone else. That standard has paid off. Their customer service skills and attention to detail consistently exceed expectations. “Customer service is one of the most important pieces of business, and we have that down,” he says. The success of his companies reflects that commitment.
Growing up alongside his cousin shaped Batson’s understanding of purpose. Being close to someone so frequently underestimated taught him that progress begins when people focus on ability rather than disability. With patience, love, and the right support, achievement becomes inevitable rather than exceptional.
As a millennial entrepreneur running seven companies, Batson acknowledges that mission-driven businesses come with unique challenges. While the communities they serve offer strong support, recognition does not always follow in the broader business landscape. Businesses centered on impact are often overlooked in favor of those focused solely on profit. Still, Batson remains resolute, viewing the obstacles as part of the calling rather than a deterrent.
Looking ahead, his hope is simple but powerful. He wants Helping Heroes Staffing to be remembered as proof that inclusion works. Not as charity, not as a risk, but as a sustainable and effective business model. More than anything, he hopes others will follow the example of those willing to be trailblazers for a community that has waited far too long to be fully included.
