Hulu’s “Washington Black” Brings a Bold, Beautiful Story of Freedom and Adventure to the Screen

This summer, Hulu is set to captivate audiences with Washington Black, an extraordinary eight-episode limited series premiering July 23. Adapted from Esi Edugyan’s acclaimed novel, this historical drama delivers a gripping, emotional, and visually stunning story of a young boy’s quest for freedom—and the remarkable journey that follows.

Set in the 19th century, Washington Black follows 11-year-old George Washington “Wash” Black, an enslaved boy on a Barbados plantation whose life is forever changed after a shocking event sets him on the run. His escape, aided by the eccentric English inventor Christopher “Titch” Wilde, becomes an unexpected adventure across continents—from the Caribbean to the icy shores of Nova Scotia, into the deserts of Morocco, and even through the skies in a handmade airship.

The series masterfully blends historical fiction with themes of resilience, imagination, and identity. It traces Wash’s evolution from a scared child into a brilliant young man with a passion for science, drawing, and invention—making his story both deeply personal and universally inspiring.

Starring newcomer Eddie Karanja as Young Wash and Ernest Kingsley Jr. as his adult counterpart, the series also features powerful performances from Sterling K. Brown, who plays Medwin Harris and serves as an executive producer, and Tom Ellis as Titch. With a diverse and talented supporting cast that includes Rupert Graves, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Iola Evans, and Charles Dance, Washington Black is brought to life with emotional depth and sweeping cinematic vision.

What sets Washington Black apart is its ability to address hard historical truths while weaving a hopeful, often magical narrative. The storytelling is layered, with dual timelines exploring both Wash’s early escape and his adult search for purpose and healing.

Led by showrunner Selwyn Seyfu Hinds and directed by a dynamic team including Wanuri Kahiu and Mo Marable, the series offers a fresh lens on a harrowing yet hopeful journey, making it one of Hulu’s most ambitious and important releases to date.

As the world continues to seek stories of strength, history, and healing, Washington Black arrives as a timely reminder that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit can soar.

Washington Black premieres July 23 exclusively on Hulu.
