What started as a simple 8th-grade photography project turned into a lifelong passion and powerhouse brand for Mecca Clarke. As a leading brand photographer, media entrepreneur, and the founder of Blk Girls Shoot, she has built a platform that not only captures stories but also creates opportunities for Black women in media. With a bold, vibrant, and intentional approach to visual storytelling, Mecca is redefining what it means to build a profitable creative business while making space for others to thrive. In this exclusive interview, she shares her journey, her vision, and the impact she’s making in the industry.

FEMI: From Passion to Purpose – Your journey into photography started with an 8th-grade school project. What was that moment like, and how did it shape your path toward becoming a leading brand photographer and media entrepreneur?
MECCA: Honestly, when I did that first photography project in the eighth grade, I had no idea I was stepping into my purpose—I was just having fun. And that’s how God works. He plants seeds in moments we don’t even recognize as significant yet. That project sparked something in me, a love for capturing stories through images. Now, as a brand photographer, I show up for my clients with that same joy, knowing that I’m not just taking pictures—I’m helping them build a visual identity that reflects their purpose and vision.
FEMI: Empowering Black Women in Media – Blk Girls Shoot is more than just an event series—it’s a movement. What inspired you to create this platform, and how has it impacted Black women in photography and media?
MECCA: Blk Girls Shoot was born out of the need for more representation, education, and opportunities for Black women in photography and media. I wanted to create a space where we could not only learn and grow but also connect with one another in a meaningful way. Through our workshops and networking events, we provide key industry insights, technical training, and access to established professionals like Leslie Andrews and Michelle Harris. The impact has been powerful—women are not just improving their craft, but they’re building confidence, securing major opportunities, and breaking barriers in an industry that hasn’t always made space for us.
FEMI: The Art of Visual Storytelling – Your photography is known for its bold, vibrant, and impactful style. How do you approach capturing the essence of a brand or individual, and what makes a strong visual narrative?
MECCA: For me, brand photography is about more than just aesthetics—it’s about intention. Every brand has a story, and my job is to make sure that story translates visually. When working with clients, I start by understanding their mission, audience, and the emotions they want to evoke. From there, I incorporate my signature bold and vibrant style while ensuring that each image aligns with their brand identity. A strong visual narrative isn’t just beautiful—it’s strategic, authentic, and helps brands connect with their audience on a deeper level.
FEMI: Building a Profitable Creative Business – Many photographers struggle to turn their passion into a sustainable career. What are some key business lessons you’ve learned, and what advice would you give to creatives looking to monetize their craft?
MECCA: One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the power of clarity and positioning. You have to know who you’re serving and how your work solved their problem. Niching down was a game-changer for me—it allowed me to focus on an industry where I could provide real value and build authority.
Secondly, pricing with confidence is crucial. Charge your worth and add tax. The right clients, the ones who value your expertise, will pay you what you deserve. Too often, creatives undercharge out of fear, but when you price correctly, you attract the right clientele and build a sustainable business.
Lastly, systems and consistency matter. Running a creative business isn’t just about talent; it’s about having the right strategies in place to ensure steady bookings, strong client relationships, and long-term growth.

FEMI: What’s Next for Mecca Clarke? – You’ve hosted sold-out boot camps, spoken at major industry events, and mentored countless creatives. What’s on the horizon for you and Blk Girls Shoot in the coming years?
MECCA: I’m excited about expanding my impact in the industry. I’m currently developing a new coaching program that will help more photographers build profitable, sustainable businesses—not just through creativity, but through strong business strategies. Blk Girls Shoot will continue to grow as well, with more educational initiatives, networking opportunities, and brand partnerships to empower Black women in media on a larger scale. The vision is bigger than me, and I’m committed to creating a legacy that opens doors for the next generation of photographers and creatives.
