Recognizing the Power in Your Pitch

Saturday FEMI magazine hosted the “Pitch Like a Boss” virtual event.  Moderators, Tiffany Terrell and Tanisha Davis, hosted the panel discussion with media experts to inform others of the power in the pitch.  Whether you call it a “sales pitch”, “elevator pitch” or etc; your brief and concise introductions help to break your brand into every industry.  The panel experts were:

This sensational panel shared the importance of knowing the power in your pitch.  Panelists actively discussed how to deliver killer pitches to media platforms.  Here are some suggestions to implement in your practice:

  • Develop meaningful relationships.  Don’t just pitch for the sake of pitching and only getting what you want but build a rapport with that media platform, contributing writer or publicist.  Ask how they’re doing, celebrate their wins or even send a birthday wish.
  • Be specific in your pitch.  Media platforms don’t have much time to spare so when they are checking your email message you have to capture their interest immediately.  Here’s how:
    • 1st Sentence:  Address the person by their name and note a recent article or etc from that platform.  If you don’t know it, do your research.  Avoid mass emailing and copy/paste formats.
    • 2nd Sentence:  Let the reader know who you are.  Include specifics about who you are in your industry.
    • 3rd Sentence:  Inform them of what you want and what you can do for that platform.  Your pitch can’t be one-sided.
  • Have a media kit.  Your media kit should be visually appealing and include your contact information, bio, links and more in one place.
  • Allow time for a reply.  Most platforms have 24-48 hours to respond to your inquiry.  Nothing happens immediately and patience should be granted.

Our expert panelists even dropped gems about networking during COVID-19.  Yes, there are still ways to network and build your brand in your industry.  Although webinars are amazing, sometimes you have to go beyond the hundred person event and inquire directly with someone to build a great connection. Here’s what they suggested:

  • Network on social platforms such as LinkedIn.
  • Offer to have a virtual cup of coffee through a Zoom chat or etc.
  • Do your research.  When networking, look into what they person provides, what’s their platform or more to know how the relationship can be beneficial.

Everyone can be a wealth of knowledge if you connect with them in a positive way.  While building your brand, establish those meaningful connections along the way to take your brand to a higher level.
