Jordan Karim is the Founder of Flora & Noor, a brand originally created to cater to her own skincare needs and her son’s eczema. Working in pharmaceutical skincare as a consultant, she noticed a gap in the beauty industry for halal-certified skincare and clean products that target the skin concerns of those with melanin-rich skin as well as chronic skin conditions. Her pharmaceutical background helped her formulate the products by knowing which ingredients to use and which ingredients to avoid. Flora & Noor is a Chicago-based skincare brand and the only halal-certified skincare brand in the US.
All products are alcohol-free, free of animal by-products, and permissible for everyone, especially Muslims to use. They are pushing the boundaries of high-performance skincare and environmental and social consciousness with the power of plants, inclusivity, and innovation. Jordan is a Black Muslim woman, wife, and mother of two young children and holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Spelman College.
Can you share with us the inspiration behind starting your skincare brand and how your identity influenced its creation? How did the brand name come about?
For about 10 years working in pharmaceutical skincare, I dealt with the lack of halal-certified skincare, and at the same time during the pandemic and treating my son’s eczema, I realized that too many people like myself had to also choose between clean and effective when it came to finding skincare products. I decided to go out on my own and create a brand that I could selfishly use in good conscience but also that was inclusive of all of my brothers and sisters. Initially, the first product was created in my kitchen for my son’s eczema, and the rest of the assortment I expanded from there with formulations for those with chronic skin conditions, melanin-rich skin, sensitive skin, and those who need to use halal products. All of the products are inspired by traditions and ingredients from Africa and the Middle East.
