It was an honor to have a Q&A with Mr. and Mrs. Lee, you may find out something new about these two.

Over the years, what were the biggest changes that were made to help you become the new Murphy Lee?

Murphy Lee: Just growing up, learning from my mistakes, learning from others’ mistakes, and of course, children put a different perspective on things in life. New Murphy Lee is just perfect timing for the music biz growing up and the fans aren’t just teeny boppers anymore. We have seasoned fans and former college graduates, and they deserve music that caters to their now. Something they can relate to because Hip Hop is now over 40 years old.

Why is Black Love important, and how do you feel couples of African American descent can better understand each other’s differences?

Murph: We have to just live, and do what’s comfy in our own lives. Most relationships were started because of tv or parental expectations. It should be more natural. I think we overthink relationships and put rules on them where it becomes a task. When really we just need to naturally care about the spouse as if they were a sibling or best friend. You never hurt your sibling or best friends on purpose, do ya? That way, no games are being played. The rules of relationships will have humans playing games when it should be famlee. You don’t wanna hurt your famlee.

Seviin: Representation matters – positive representation matters. We already see the brokenness that can happen in relationships, especially in our community, but it’s essential to see more positive relationships that represent our culture. I see how important other cultures have made representation in their community, which builds a certain kind of confidence and understanding because of the commonality.

As mentioned earlier, communication and comprehension are key. Taking time to communicate and learning patience to understand each other’s differences. Knowing everyone will not come picture perfect, and you might grow together. That is why time always tells more about someone, so take your time to learn about and from each other. Individuality is vital in relationships, so respecting that you are still your own person in your relationship is important. You must be willing to compromise and empathize with each other’s differences. We need more empathy in the world, period. You can’t have a tantrum every time there is a difference; that’s unrealistic. Differences are good. Be brave enough to talk to your partner about your issues, not outsiders. Speak to the person with that you have the issue, as they are the only ones who can provide the best insight on how the relationship can move forward.
