Our country is in a state of unrest. Communities of color are tired. We are being murdered. We aren’t being heard. We are being treated unjustly. This isn’t new either. For centuries, we have fought against oppression. On March 13, 2020 justice remained unserved. While searching for 2 individuals who happened to already be in police custody, the Louisville Metro Police Department entered the wrong residence without warning. The department then proceeded to fire 22 shots into the home after their wrongful entry into the residence. 27 year old, Breonna Taylor, was fatally shot 8 times due to an unlawful, no knock entry by the Louisville Metro Police Department.
She was a beloved woman who also served as an essential EMT worker in her district. She did not have to die. She should be here. Her life mattered. With the help of grassroot organizations such as Until Freedom, June 11, 2020 is now known for the passing of the Breonna Taylor Law. “The Louisville Metro Council voted unanimously to ban no-knock warrants to prevent what happened to Breonna Taylor from happening again,” reported Until Freedom. Although her life was lost, this is the first step towards justice. However continued diligence is needed to fight for Breonna’s justice.
As seen below, advocacy through phone calls to elected officials and proper use of social media can also aid in obtaining justice for Breonna. It does not stop here. Each day new ground must be covered. Each day more calls have to be made. Each day social media posts with hashtags are needed. To learn more about Breonna Taylor please visit here.
