How Rashad Calhoun, Celebrity Fashion Designer and Owner of ‘DAHSAR’ Has Become the “King of Prom,” and a Go-To for Celebs

Atlanta, GA (May 2021) – Since the age of 12, Rashad Calhoun has always had a passion for fashion and creating pieces of art that allowed him to express how he was feeling at any given time. At 14, his mother bought him his first sewing machine and he created his first dress for a friend.  Back then, he never could have imagined that 20 years later he would be a major force in the fashion industry – featuring his work at premier fashion shows, being displayed on Billboards in Times Square, clothing some of the hottest names in Hollywood, and lacing teens across the country with bold styles for prom through his company Dahsar

However, that is now his reality. The Chester, PA native has showcased his designs at New York Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week and numerous other shows across the U.S. Recently, he appeared on the cover of fashion publication, BB Magazine, and is currently in the middle of a crazy prom season where teens nationwide will flaunt customized Dahsar-made dresses and tuxedos. Since most proms last year were cancelled due to COVID-19, there has been a flood of requests for his services in 2021.

“So far I have styled several people from shows like ‘Growing Up Hip Hop’, ‘Love and Hip Hop’ and others, as well as others like Lil’ Mo, Selena Johnson and Charlie Baltimore. This summer I am doing a fashion show for Trina Braxton and designing Lamar Odom’s outfit for his celebrity boxing match,” Calhoun said. “I can’t even disclose some of the names I am about to work with, but they are huge A-listers. This is the most exciting period of my life and I am happy to see all of my hard work paying off.”

A true workaholic and craftsman, Calhoun has remarkably constructed all of his unique clothing items single-handedly. He doesn’t have a team or an assistant; just gifted hands. Often, representatives for celebrities contact him in need of outfits for their clients within a day of a red carpet event or award show. He has been known to turn around dresses in 6 hours, packaged and shipped across the country on more than one occasion.

One of those instances was for Koryn Hawthorne, Dove Award Winner and a past finalist on NBC’s The Voice as she prepared to attend the Grammys. Now, he is in overdrive working on requests for prom dresses and tuxedos.  His sales have shot through the roof, in fact, he already has orders and deposits made for the year 2023.

“Designing outfits for prom is one of my favorite things to do because I love seeing the joy on the teenagers’ faces when they get a dress or a tux they love. They look and feel like stars,” he said. “I have gained the reputation of being the go-to guy for prom, so I consider myself the “King of Prom” as far as design goes. I have 58 clients for prom this season so you will definitely see some dope looks.”

While being a stylist, celebrity fashion designer, and a man responsible for helping teens nationwide to cement their biggest memories can be stressful, Calhoun lives for the adrenaline rush.

“I was made for this,” he said. “I have been underrated for some time, but my hands have begun to put me in all the right places because I am not good, but great at what I do.”
