Alan R. Rodriguez is an American TV actor who took an interest in acting at the early age of 8. At 15 years old, he attended Julia Richman High School in NYC, where he enrolled in the school’s Talent Unlimited Program for theater. It was here that he began to gain the experience that would later land him prominent roles in hit shows like ‘POWER’, ‘The Good Wife’, ‘Blue Bloods’, ‘The Following’, ‘Orange is the New Black’ and many more.
Presently, Alan is playing the role of Agent Marquez on CBS’s ‘Bull’. Brilliant, brash, and charming, Dr. Bull is the ultimate puppet master as he combines psychology, human intuition, and high tech data to learn what makes jurors, attorneys, witnesses, and the accused tick.
After more than 20 years in the entertainment industry, Alan shows no signs of slowing down!
Here is what he shared with FEMI in a recent interview.
Your list of acting credits is extensive, shorts and TV, do you have a preference of job types and genre?
Alan R. Rodriguez: I enjoy dramatic acting most with the occasional action and comedy genres. I don’t have a particular preference of medium. What’s most important to me is transforming into whatever character I’m playing. i.e., sinking my teeth into the role.
How is your current acting role different from your dream and/or goal role?
Alan R. Rodriguez: I don’t have a dream or goal role. As long as I’m doing what I love, every role is my dream or goal role.
People of color in Hollywood have not had the easiest time in the entertainment industry. What is one of your most memorable acting experiences?
Alan R. Rodriguez: Being a person of color, I am joyful to see that at this present time in the industry, there are many roles for all ethnicities. I truly embrace each and every one of my acting roles. One of the coolest things I’ve had to learned is how a body reacts after being shot. It took technical training and is something, thankfully I’ve never experienced in real life, but now I would say as an actor, I’m an expert at being shot for a scene!
How do you handle the mental and emotional aspects of being an actor?
Alan R. Rodriguez: Meditation, exercise and generally living life. Acting is my work, so I treat it like any other job. At times, it can get mentally draining and intense, but I give myself “me time” to recuperate.
Is it easy to get type cast? In your opinion, how can you avoid it?
Alan R. Rodriguez: My first roles were often blue-collar guys with edge and grit. I did my best to be as real as possible playing these characters. Somehow, I must have impressed casting because now the same CD’s who cast me as a prison guard and custodian, also cast me as executives and chief of police. I strive to bring humanity to each role. Of course, larger roles offer more opportunities for the actor to create a full multi-dimensional human being. I am happy to say I have not been typecast, actually the opposite in my case. Each role is a surprise and rarely do I play the same type person.
