Queen Sugar Recap Season 5 Episode 1

Queen Sugar is back with its 5th season and we’re ready for the fight! Queen Sugar is a television drama series airing on OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) created and executive produced by Ava DuVernay, with Oparah Winfrey serving as one of its producers. The series is based on a 2014 novel written by Natalie Baszile.

Queen Sugar is about the lives of three siblings from Louisiana, (Rutina Wesley, Dawn- Lyen Gardner, and Kofi Siriboe) who’s dealing with the lost of their father, while operating their generation’s legacy;  an 800-acre sugarcane farm. The series highlights racial profiling, slavery in American history, the misuse of the criminal justice system, and other issues associated to African Americans.

Season 5 episode1 began with Nova; played by Rutina Wesley as she cut away her Locs, while reciting positive affirmations and prayers. She performed this ritual to rid of her bad habits, while welcoming new and positive energy. It looks like Nova is embracing her journey, but will cutting her Locs and openly dating a white ex cop, who used to cheat with her on his wife change her prospective or show her how cruel the world and karma can really be?

Ralph Angel, her brother who’s never too far behind played by Kofi Siriboe received a notice in the mail stating the highway, in which the community fought hard to demolish is now active of being built. This highway would not only run through their property and farm but through over half of the black communities land as well. Their sister, Charley (played by Dawn- Lyen Gardner) who is a newly voted and first black council member for the town of St. Josephine works 24/7 helping the community and their farmers but her new rival, Parker played by Amirah Vann is playing for a different team.

Parker tries to convince Charley they could come to a mutual agreement with the route, when Charley declined, Parker played dirty by using her power to become a board member with the bank of St. Josephine with a message and pop up visit to the 1st annual St Josephine feast honoring the founder of the town, St. Josephine. Parker announced she’s heard the concerns and complaints of the public as she stands beside Charley and will no longer build the highway through their farming land. She added that the highway will now run a different route saving their properties, but the new route drives directly through St. Josephine’s cemetery, where generations and loved ones of the community is buried.

Whew! This episode came in ready for a fight, not to mention Ralph Angel and Darla played by Bianca Lawson has decided to get married despite their first painful attempt, and COVID! The Covid-19 pandemic was mentioned in the beginning of the episode but it hadn’t reached the US yet.

This was an excellent start for their 5th season. I’m excited to see what’s to come further in the season. Join us here weekly for the Queen Sugar recap! Leave us some feedback on your thoughts about this episode; we’d love to hear from you.
