We had a chance to talk with the multi-talented phenomenon and got a deeper look into who Butta-B-Rocka really is.
When did you discover your multitude of talents?
I’ve been singing for years since the age of 13; music was always my main passion. It wasn’t until I injured myself while on tour in the Bahamas that caused me to have to get off the road for a few weeks, that was an eye-opener experience for me- that forced me to have to dig deep and figure out what my other passions and talents were. I’ve always wanted to do other things like write a book, write a play, become an actor, etc. but I was afraid to take that chance, afraid no one would support me, and afraid to put myself out there, but I realized that I had to take a chance on myself and just do it. Now I’m an Amazon Best Seller Author from my book Fear of Failure Fear of Not Trying, I’ve written a successful play that featured 7 National Recording Artist, I’m the Editor n Chief of Defiant Ones Teen Magazine, I host my own podcast called Transparency Talks Podcast that’s been picked up on iHeart Radio, Spotify, Pandora and overseas on six major radio platforms and I have recently been cast for two projects that I begin filming in March and the other in May. One is a T.V. show, and one is a feature film, both are major placements!
Music-wise, what stands out between international music and music in the U.S.?
Music in the U.S. is not diverse- only mainstream artist songs are played- whereas overseas music is music- they don’t care if you are a major or indie artist. If your music is good, they support it. I’ve literally toured all over the world Canada, Portugal, Spain, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Jamaica, Africa, and many more, and I’ve shown so much love and support!
What is the story behind your stage name?
I used to do talent shows in Tampa. Everyone would say my voice was smooth like butter, and when I moved to Atlanta and began doing demos for TLC while recording, the producer would always say, “Yeah, Brocka,” so when I decided to put out my own project- I went by Butta B-Rocka!
What were some challenges when writing your stage play, “I Cheated So What?”
There weren’t many challenges writing my stage play- I wrote it with Director and talented writer Donald Grey- it was a spin-off of my single “The Storm.” so we already had a blueprint and concept. I’ve always written songs, but of course, writing a play is different. Once Donald showed and explained how to add depth and layers to my writing and how to have the various characters interact with one another, it was an easy process. He offered to write the entire play, but I wanted the experience. It was a beautiful collaboration, bouncing ideas off one another. We wrote the play in less than a month. Then seeing your work go live and each actor making that character and what you wrote their own, was magical.
What advice can you give to young Black girls who have multiple talents in the arts?
Master one thing then another. Men like Steve Harvey, Puffy, 50 Cent all have their hands in multiple things, but before they did, they mastered one craft then expanded from that. Master your skill, then don’t be afraid to try new things, learn new trades, and continue self-development. Don’t let anyone hold you in a box. Women are the most creative people I know; we have always been able to multitask.
How have you impacted the music industry?
I’ve definitely defied what others and even myself thought that I could do. I hope my story inspires others never to give up. I’ve been blessed to do some amazing things; I’ve worked with some incredible people like Janet Jackson, Kanye West, Akon, TLC, Zac Brown, NAS, and more, but I’ve also been able to build a name and career outside of just working with them. I’ve been blessed to sing before Presidents and Prime Ministers, and I’m an indie artist, meaning there is no backing, no big label to help push me out, just my support team and me, yet I’ve still managed to find my way. My motto is, “If they don’t let me in, I’ll build my own door,” and I’ve done just that. I’m continually growing and striving to get to that next level. For me, the next level is winning a Grammy, having my music played on all stations, Features on T.V. and Film, and writing for T.V. and Film.
Butta-B-Rocka is definitely a mogul in the making and is setting the standard for young Black women to come.
I would love to connect with everyone.
