Amina Jennifer: Breaking down Fashion Barriers

It’s no secret that the fashion industry could use a little more diversity. Although it has come a long way from the “America’s Next Top Model” days, representation of black and brown women and men is still lacking. The definition of diversity has also changed from simply referring to race, to now including age and body size. Hailing from our Nation’s Capital, Amina Jennifer is affectionately known as Mother Amina, and she has taken the fashion world over by storm. She is a fashion model and actor, who at just age 7, strut her stuff “B Virtuous on Ms. B’s Runway Fashion Show”. She was recently featured in Luxe Curves Magazine as the Luxe Beauty alongside Rick Ross. She let us know how COVID has affected her creative process, her views on current fashion trends, and what we can expect from her in the future.

How has this time of quarantine allowed you to develop and create better ideas for your brand?

I believe this time of quarantine has given me the opportunity to truly get to know myself better. My desire for greater self-awareness has allowed me to gain access to many innovative ideas. I feel I have been shown the infinite power of boundless creativity, and fearless self-expression.

How were you affected this past year by COVID-19?

I think COVID-19 has taught me a lot of lessons over the past year and has opened my eyes to new possibilities.

What led to your journey into the fashion world?

I believe fashion is a limitless form of self-expression. You can create and recreate yourself in infinite ways. Fashion has always allowed me to bring my imagination and personality to life.

You did not get the chance to graduate with all of your peers in 2020 physically; what was that like, and how did you figure out a new way to celebrate your accomplishment?

Honestly, I found value in not being able to physically graduate because it put me in a position to focus on myself. I think if I had been in school and graduated physically, I would not be as developed and aware as I am today. My family celebrated virtually, and I found it pretty cool to honor a traditional accomplishment in such an untraditional way. Overall, I believe this year provided me with much needed experience that will secure my success for many years to come.

What can we expect to see from you in 2021?

You can expect the unexpected.

What are some trending fashions right now for the cooler temperatures?

I think layering is pretty trendy. I feel like it not only adds dimension to any outfit but also lots of warmth and comfort.

What has your experience been thus far as an African American woman in the Fashion industry?

I think the fashion industry still has much room for improvement as far as equality. But, I personally have enjoyed my experiences.

Do you feel there is a great level of support for black designers in the fashion world?

I feel black designers have the ability to break down barriers and create their own fashion world without needing any support.
