The anticipation surrounding Children of Blood and Bone reached new heights on Monday, July 27, as filmmakers, cast members, and industry leaders gathered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City for the film’s exclusive trailer launch event. More than a first look at one of the year’s most anticipated fantasy films, the evening celebrated the creative vision, cultural authenticity, and collaborative artistry behind bringing Tomi Adeyemi’s beloved novel to the big screen.
The event featured a special Q&A moderated by Emmy Award-winning writer, producer, and actor Lena Waithe, who guided an insightful conversation with the filmmakers and creative team about adapting the internationally acclaimed bestseller into a cinematic experience.
Leading the discussion was director and co-screenwriter Gina Prince-Bythewood, whose acclaimed body of work has consistently centered powerful storytelling and emotionally rich characters. Joining her on stage were cast members Thuso Mbedu, Tosin Cole, Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh, and Regina King, along with producers Matt Jackson, Karen Rosenfelt, and Wyck Godfrey. Executive producers Reggie Rock Bythewood, Jeff Waxman, and Jennifer Madeloff also attended, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the ambitious production.
The evening also recognized the artists responsible for building the film’s breathtaking world. Costume designer Charlese Antoinette Jones, Academy Award-winning production designer Hannah Beachler, make-up designer Matiki Anoff, dialect coach Yetunde Felix-Ukwu, hair designer Andrea Mona Bowman, artist and cultural consultant Laolu Senbanjo, and behind-the-scenes videographer Benita Vlok were among those celebrated for their contributions to the visual and cultural authenticity of Orïsha.
Adding even more excitement to the evening were appearances from special guests, including actress Vanessa Estelle Williams, Tony Award-winning performer Adrienne Warren, sports journalist Cari Champion, and Tony Award-winning actress Kara Young, among others.
Based on Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel, Children of Blood and Bone transports audiences to the mythical kingdom of Orïsha, where magic has been violently stripped away from its people. The story follows a courageous young woman who embarks on a dangerous quest to restore what was stolen. Alongside her brother, she forms an unlikely alliance with the king’s son and daughter to challenge an oppressive regime and reignite hope throughout the kingdom.
The film boasts one of the most impressive ensemble casts assembled for a fantasy epic in recent years. Alongside Thuso Mbedu are Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Academy Award nominee Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, along with Idris Elba and Academy Award winner Viola Davis. The cast also includes Saniyya Sidney, Diaana Babnicova, Bukky Bakray, Nigerian music sensation Ayra Starr, Shamz Garuba, Kola Bodunde, Pamilerin Afolake Ayodeji, and Tèmítópé Fágbénlé.
From its sweeping visuals to its celebration of African mythology, Children of Blood and Bone promises to be more than a fantasy adventure.
