SALUTE THE QUEENS

Tuesday Night at the 2020 Hip-Hop Awards, the ladies had something to say. Starting with the Cypers featuring exciting new and upcoming artists like Chika, Adé, Flo Milli came through to spit their best rhymes.

This Year, “the ladies had something to say,” featuring cyphers with the ladies of R&B. In fact, before the show, Brandy recollected that epic “I Wanna Be Down” display from the 2014 B.E.T. Awards, and as I gazed at the Cypher, I understood why. She alters ego (as Bran’Nu) recreated the girl power rap performance with Teyana Taylor (who brought home Video Director of the Year), H.E.R., and Erykah Badu.

It gave me “Ladies Night” vibes but from an R&B perspective.

With Badu behind the layers, Teyana Taylor was up first, underhandedly establishing the mood. Stating rhymes like “The tone is what I set it/If you want it to come and get it, don’t forget it.” H.E.R. followed, paying homage to her Filipino culture, and she paid recognition to Breonna Taylor. “Black queens with dreams/Beautiful, exceptional,” she proceeds to strike. “Say you wanna be down, but still ain’t arrest them, though.”

Badu served dual duty beyond the turntables, taking her angle at the mic. “Look, I’m about to go in,” she raps in her takedown, armed with boxing gloves hanging from her neck. “I’m about to get inside these bitches heads.”

Brandy swaddled it up with a whole verse. “Black females we gonna flourish in these conditions/Born to front lines, not in your kitchen/I’m on a mission,” she raps, ending with “And if they say the sky is the limit, then buy a cloud/And if they can’t see us as an equal, they not allowed” before she righteously donned a crown.

The Cypher was anything Groundbreaking, and all we can say is, “All Hail the Queens.”
