In Miami, one such trailblazer is Anonka Dixon, the powerhouse founder of Against All Odds Music Group. As a Black woman in an industry notorious for its challenges, Anonka has carved her own path, proving that success doesn’t just mean surviving—it means thriving and lifting others as you climb.
Building a Legacy: The Birth of Against All Odds
Anonka’s journey to creating her label was born out of her own experiences as a woman in the music business. “Against All Odds was inspired by my trials and tribulations,” she shares. Recognizing the systemic barriers and double standards faced by women, especially Black women, she was determined to make a difference. “I decided to build my own table of good business people so there would be more of us in the business.”
Today, her label focuses on mentoring emerging artists and producing future moguls. Through joint ventures, she not only empowers artists but also ensures they understand the business side of music before signing any contracts. “Mentoring and producing future moguls was the goal,” Anonka explains.
From the Field to the Studio: Lessons from the LFL
Before stepping into the music industry, Anonka was a quarterback in the Legends Football League (LFL), a role that prepared her for the challenges of leadership, branding, and negotiation. “Being a quarterback taught me that I was a walking billboard,” she says, noting the importance of representing her brand at all times.
The competitive nature of sports also gave her a strategic edge in negotiations. “I would rather have a small piece of a huge pie than a large piece of a small pie,” she shares, reflecting her collaborative and pragmatic approach to business.
Elevating Talent and Breaking Barriers
Anonka’s work with artists like Tracy Supreme, Official D’ Angel, and Big Arie demonstrates her commitment to creating sustainable, impactful careers. Her strategy? Tailoring her approach to each artist’s vision and goals. “We come up with a plan together and execute it,” she says, emphasizing teamwork.
Her process for identifying talent is rooted in intuition and vision. “I see things in people they don’t see in themselves,” she explains. For Anonka, it’s not just about raw talent—it’s about faith, ambition, and a shared belief in success.
Music in Her Blood
Growing up in a musical family, with her father, Algie Liptrot, as a member of the legendary KC and the Sunshine Band and her mother as a DJ, music was ingrained in Anonka’s life from an early age. “It was the stories my dad told me about the business that made me want to make a difference,” she recalls. Those early influences shaped her vision to be the change she wanted to see in the industry.
Major Milestones and a Vision for the Future
Anonka has achieved significant milestones, including producing five singles with Grammy-winning producer Drumma Boy and overseeing Tracy Supreme’s hit, “Can’t Come Today.” Her ability to create opportunities stems from her visionary mindset and commitment to building artists’ confidence and careers.
Despite the challenges of being a Black woman in the industry, Anonka remains undeterred. “I use my experiences as motivation and continue to lead by example,” she says. Her resilience, vision, and dedication to mentorship have solidified her reputation as a game-changer in the music business.
