As the holiday season approaches, a special spirit of joy and celebration fills the air, reminding us of the true reason for the festivities—celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. For L. Tricie Hendrix, the founder and chief director of Purple September Productions (PSP), this season is a perfect backdrop for her artistry, reflecting her deep commitment to representing the supernatural realm through creative expression.
With over 25 years of experience in the arts, Tricie has made it her life’s work to convey divine messages through choreography, dance, theater, music, scriptwriting, and visual arts. Leading PSP, as well as overseeing three dance teams—PSP, VCMI Suitland, and Life Covenant Christian Ministries (LCCM)—Tricie is on a mission to cultivate the arts while ministering the gospel on an international scale. Her ultimate desire is to showcase God’s glory through a creative lens and mentor others into doing the same.
In an exclusive interview, Tricie shared her insights on her latest production, “The Trilogy – JESUS: The I Am,” and how the spirit of Christmas informs her work.
What inspired you to write and produce “The Trilogy – JESUS: The I Am,” and how does your faith influence the storytelling?
Tricie: It all started with a dream where God instructed me to create a production that simplified the concept of the Trinity. He conveyed the message that He loves His people simply because He does. I wrote the play based on my personal relationship with the Trinity, and the love I experience fuels my faith and trust in them.
Can you provide a synopsis of the play?
Tricie: This dynamic production showcases a family’s encounter with Jesus through music and dance, perfect for the holiday season. Audiences will be enlightened and uplifted, encouraged to explore and enhance their personal time with Jesus. They will laugh, dance, and ultimately fall in love with this thrilling depiction of the Trinity’s love.
Can you share who you collaborated with to bring this play to life? How did you choose your team?
Tricie: I worked with two teams made up of my church community and my personal creative arts company. During the vision process, God revealed to me who to select for this project, emphasizing His guidance in every aspect of the production.
What impact do you hope this play will have on the community or individuals who experience it?
Tricie: My goal is for this play to instill a sense of purpose and acceptance within the audience during this holiday season. I want viewers to feel inspired to pursue their God-given talents and, more importantly, to truly experience the profound love of God.
In what ways does your work in the arts serve as a platform to express your faith?
Tricie: My work is designed to connect people with their God-given talents and encourage them to push the boundaries of their artistic expression. This transcends human limitations and self-doubt, especially important as we reflect on our blessings during the holiday season.
Are there any future projects or themes you’re excited to explore that blend your entrepreneurial spirit with your passion for theater?
Tricie: The trilogy I am currently developing includes three productions. Our second installment, ‘Holy Spirit: My Breath,’ is set to debut in June, followed by the final part, ‘God: My Creator,’ in December.
As the holiday season envelops us in its warmth, Tricie continues to be a guiding force in the realm of faith-based artistry, reminding us of the joy of sharing Jesus through creative expression. With exciting projects on the horizon, her influence resonates, encouraging all to reflect on the true meaning of the season.
