Dr. Cynthia Smith, a Jacksonville, Florida native, is a force of determination and innovation in education. As the founder of the first free private STEM school, Minds of the Future Academy, she has turned obstacles into opportunities, building a legacy that transforms lives. From her early days growing up on Jacksonville’s East Side to earning a doctorate from Nova Southeastern University, Smith’s journey is one of grit, vision, and purpose.
From Dreamer to Doer
Dr. Smith’s path to success was marked by resilience. As a first-generation college graduate, she pursued her degrees in Education and Curriculum at the University of North Florida with honors. While working full-time and raising a family, she earned her doctorate before the age of 40, researching college completion among young men of color.
Her dream of Minds of the Future Academy was born out of personal reflection. “School was a beacon of hope for me as a child. I wanted to create a space where students could gain valuable skills that prepare them for college or career readiness,” she shares. Despite having no prior knowledge of opening a private school, Smith taught herself the ropes through books, workshops, and mentorships. The challenges were immense, particularly around funding STEM programs, but her strong ties to the community and determination made her dream a reality.
Revolutionizing Education
Minds of the Future Academy stands out for its innovative approach to learning. The school’s nontraditional STEM curriculum includes robotics, visual arts, gardening, jazz dance, and media production. “We focus on preparing minds for bright futures,” Smith explains. Her instructional model tailors learning to each child’s unique style, using small groups and rotations to ensure students engage at their skill levels.
Smith’s ability to achieve remarkable improvements in statewide test scores and lead dramatic school turnarounds stems from her focus on relationship building. “I connect with local nonprofits and businesses to provide tutoring and academic support. Collaboration is key,” she says.
Championing Early Learning and Community Growth
Transitioning from traditional education to early childhood education, Smith saw the importance of strong foundations. At Minds of the Future Academy, parents are required to volunteer, fostering family engagement and creating consistent routines for their children. “Education starts at home, and we ensure parents know how to support their child’s learning journey,” she notes.
Smith’s impact extends beyond the classroom. By mentoring Black business owners in East Jacksonville, she has spurred an economic renaissance. Through her monthly lunch-and-learn sessions and entrepreneurial classes, she helps businesses thrive. “It’s heartwarming to see others implement strategies and succeed,” she says.
Balancing Roles and Pursuing Big Dreams
As a mother, wife, entrepreneur, and educator, Smith seamlessly balances her roles. She credits her upbringing with teaching her time management, a skill that now helps her manage her ambitious goals. Her vision for Minds of the Future Academy includes expanding K-12 education, enhancing after-school STEM programs, and raising funds for a permanent campus through a capital campaign.
A Legacy of Inspiration
Dr. Smith’s story is one of empowerment, innovation, and resilience. Whether mentoring at-risk youth, supporting Black entrepreneurs, or redefining education, she remains an inspiration to all. “My dreams are bigger than my reality, and nine years later, I’m still dreaming,” she says.
Through Minds of the Future Academy, Dr. Cynthia Smith is not only shaping young minds but also building a brighter future for her community.
