FEMI: Can you share the inspiration behind your latest single “So High” and the process of working with Gregory ‘Grams’ Moore on its production?
Bonita Jalane: The inspiration behind “So High” came from a deeply personal place. Gregory ‘Grams’ Moore, who was like a brother to me, produced the track while he was incarcerated. We’ve known each other since our teens, and despite the lost time while he was away, his determination to create this track for me was unwavering. The creative process was almost magical; on my flight to LA for our recording session, I kept looking at the clouds and the phrase “I’m so high” kept resonating with me. In the studio, it felt like the words were being divinely inspired, capturing the essence of my journey and the feeling of rising above past challenges. Working with Grams on this track was seamless and filled with a shared vision of creating something truly special.
FEMI: Directing your own music video is a significant achievement. What motivated you to take on this role, and what were the challenges and rewards of directing?
Bonita Jalane: Directing my own music video was a natural progression of my artistic journey. I have a very clear vision of my music and how I want it to be presented. Taking on the role of director allowed me to ensure that every aspect of the video truly represented my artistic intent. The biggest challenge was balancing the roles of artist and director, ensuring I could stay in the creative zone while managing the technical and logistical aspects of production. With the help of some amazing creatives like Passonate Chonvill and Markeith (Project manager and Videographer) for “So High” video I was able to keep the balance. The reward, however, was immense. Seeing my vision come to life exactly as I imagined it, and knowing that it was a product of my creative control, was incredibly fulfilling. Also thank ful for my friend Headkrack (Rapper, Dish Network host) who assisted with the editing. This experience allowed me to connect with my audience on a deeper level, sharing not just my music, but my visual storytelling as well.
FEMI: Having performed alongside notable artists like Chris Brown and Fantasia, how have these experiences influenced your music and stage presence?
Bonita Jalane: Performing alongside artists like Chris Brown and Fantasia has been incredibly influential. From Chris Brown, I learned the importance of high energy and showmanship, watching him evolve from a young performer to a superstar was inspiring. Fantasia, on the other hand, taught me the power of emotional connection and authenticity in performances. Both experiences emphasized the importance of staying true to oneself while constantly pushing the boundaries of one’s performance. These influences have helped me refine my stage presence, ensuring that I deliver not just a performance, but an unforgettable experience that resonates with my audience.
FEMI: As an artist who has received significant attention from major media outlets, how do you handle the pressure that comes with increased visibility?
Bonita Jalane: Handling the pressure of increased visibility is a balancing act. It’s about staying grounded and remembering why I started making music in the first place. I focus on my passion and the messages I want to convey through my art. Support from my family, friends, and fans keeps me motivated. I also make sure to take time for myself, to recharge and reflect. Staying authentic and true to my values helps me navigate the challenges that come with attention and ensures that my music remains genuine and impactful.
FEMI: You’ve been a part of the music industry since 2012. How have you seen your musical style and personal growth evolve over the past decade?
Bonita Jalane: Over the past decade, my musical style has evolved significantly. When I started, I was heavily influenced by the artists I was working with, and I sang about topics that weren’t necessarily reflective of my own experiences. As I’ve grown, both personally and artistically, I’ve found my unique voice and style. My music now is more authentic and meaningful, focusing on themes of love, healing, and empowerment. Personally, I’ve become more confident and self-assured, which translates into my music. I’m more comfortable taking creative risks and exploring new sounds, always striving to create music that is not only enjoyable but also impactful.
What future projects can your fans look forward to, and what directions are you excited to explore in your upcoming music?
Bonita Jalane: Fans can look forward to my upcoming album “Kept Kissing Frogs,” which details my journey through love, growth, and self-discovery. I’m excited to explore a mix of genres, including R&B, hip-hop, jazz, and soul, each infused with my unique style. I’m also planning to host a listening party or concert to celebrate the release. Beyond this album, I’m looking to collaborate with more artists and producers, and perhaps even venture into directing more of my music videos. The goal is to keep evolving and pushing my creative boundaries, always bringing something fresh and authentic to my fans.
