Global Gathering of Black Creatives Returns to PLC Detroit
Fifth Annual National Black Footwear Forum:
September 26-29
The National Black Footwear Forum (BFF) returns to Detroit’s Pensole Lewis College (PLC), the only design-focused HBCU, for its fifth annual event on September 26-29. This year’s forum, hailed as “The Industry’s Homecoming,” continues its mission to celebrate the influence, leadership, and creativity of Black and Brown professionals in the global footwear industry. The event is hosted in partnership with the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA).
A highlight of the event will be the unveiling of the Apparel Design Stu/deo by fashion icon April Walker, furnished by global design leader MillerKnoll. Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, founder and president of PLC Detroit, expressed the significance of this moment: “We are honored to pay tribute to April Walker. Opening her Apparel Design Stu/deo is a testament to her commitment to nurturing the next generation of talent.”
April Walker, a legendary figure in urban fashion and streetwear, has been a trailblazer for over three decades. As the first woman to launch an urban fashion brand, her work through Walker Wear helped shape the multi-billion-dollar streetwear industry. Walker’s influence has been chronicled in documentaries and recognized by major media outlets, positioning her as a pivotal figure in fashion and culture. “This is a full-circle moment for me,” Walker shared. “It’s an opportunity to fuse the past with the present and push the culture forward, inspiring future creators.”
The three-day event will feature dynamic programming hosted by journalist Jenee Osterheldt and will bring together designers, students, executives, and supporters for learning, networking, and celebrating diversity in the industry. Esteemed speakers include notable names like Misa Hylton, Tracy Reese, Sheena Butler-Young, and many others.
Major brands like Nike, Jordan Brand, LVMH, Converse, and Under Armour are among the sponsors, showcasing their support for Black creatives. For more details, visit www.blackfootwearforum.com or follow @plcdetroit on Instagram.
