Former Miss Haiti Universe, Sarodj Bertin, is a name that you will remember once you get to know her. Born in Port-au-Prince, she has represented her nation well and continues to do so. In her youth, she aspired to become a human rights attorney and achieved her goal. However, she was also drawn to the beauty industry and seized the moment in 2010 when she competed and won the title of Miss Haiti Universe. With her new platform came a realization of responsibility, and she decided to serve children through her non-profit organization, ‘Sarodj for a Purpose’. Sarodj’s ambition meets philanthropy, and her visibility means more than just fortune and fame. She has touched and influenced many lives in a meaningful way.
How did it feel to win the title of Miss Haiti Universe 2010?
Ever since I was a little girl, I have always enjoyed everything related to beauty, like the cameras, the lights, etc. I started modeling as a teenager, and I loved it. However, it was simply a hobby as I was determined to become an attorney. I graduated from law school, obtained a master’s degree, and immediately began working. It was not until 2010, when I heard about the Miss Haiti contest, that I decided to give myself a shot, as it had been a dream of mine to participate in Miss Universe. It was not until after participating in the competition that I understood that art could be more than just a hobby. By far, it was one of the greatest events that has ever happened in my life, a dream come true! Being the representation of Haiti, and able to serve as a voice for my country was the biggest honor!
You have chosen to prioritize philanthropic endeavors by founding your non-profit ‘Sarodj for a Purpose’. Tell us why it is so important for you to do so and share more about your foundation.
I started my non-profit “Sarodj for a Purpose” in 2010, after becoming Miss Haiti Universe. I understood that the fact that I had become a public figure could be used positively, so I decided to use my image to help others through my non-profit organization. Children are a passion of mine and have been for a very long time. Unfortunately for me, I grew up without a mother. My mom Mireille Durocher Bertin was murdered in 1995, she is and will always be an inspiration to me. Not having a mother physically here with me made me understand at an early age how important it is for children to have the love and support of their parents. This is why I decided to dedicate most of my social endeavors to orphans, starting in my country Haiti, and then expanding to the Dominican Republic. Currently, my non-profit organization has different programs aiming to help children have a better future. To date, more than one thousand children’s lives have been positively impacted. Hopefully, that number can keep growing!
You are also a human rights lawyer. Tell us about your decision to pursue such a compassionate career path and have you ever practiced with a law firm?
I am an International Business Attorney and practiced law for 3 years before becoming Miss Haiti Universe. Everything we do in life has a massive impact on who we are, and becoming an attorney has impacted my life and my personality. It helped me build a stronger and more confident version of myself!
What is it like being the brand ambassador for Ultimate Cheveux hair care?
I am honored to be the face of Ultimate Cheveux, working on two campaigns now has been an amazing experience! Overall, collaborating with the entire team has been great thus far. I am extremely excited about all that we will accomplish together in 2024!
You are also working on a musical project to be released in 2024. What can you share about your sound and any upcoming single releases?
I am working on several collaborations, exploring new countries, and new cultures, which I believe will diversify and bring new colors to my music. With every single release, I feel I have become a better artist. I am in constant evolution, and I love that! This year, I am releasing new music and will announce the dates on all social media platforms. You have such an inspiring story and have been successful in multiple lanes, what would you like to leave with our ambitious readers such as yourself to help them keep pushing to make their dreams a reality?
Of course, the mindset should be to achieve something every day, by doing that we make sure we are always working towards our goals and staying productive at the same time we are constantly evolving as human beings. It is essential to keep healthy and when I say healthy, I am not only referring to physiological health, but also mental and emotional health. Taking time to understand, learn from ourselves, and heal ourselves should always be a priority! Once all those components are in order, we can work on the best version of ourselves. That is my secret, I work every day on becoming the best version of SarodJ!
As the name of her non-profit states, Sarodj Bertin lives her life with clear intention and for a purpose. She has used every one of her talents and individual experiences to not only her advantage to help build the career she has always wanted, but she also gives back in major ways to orphans and underprivileged children through the organization Sarodj for a Purpose. She made the conscious decision when she lost her mother to murder at an early age to turn that tragic situation into one that could help many other boys and girls who are being raised in similar circumstances to live the lives they were meant to live and feel supported. To date, she has impacted over one thousand children’s lives and counting.
