Fighting the Quarantine 15 During the Pandemic

Weight loss is an ongoing battle for some Americans.  The CDC reports that 49.1% of adults have tried to lose weight within the last 12 months. Wow!  Of that statistic, 56.4% more women in all age groups have tried to lose weight than male counterparts.  Let’s dive a little deeper than that.  More White Americans are attempting to lose weight at 49.4% higher than other racial demographics of African Americans (48.0%); Asian Americans (41.4%); and Hispanic Americans (49.1%).

Now let’s consider these statistics among our new normal of being on quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic.  High will power is needed to combat the constant urges to snack while working from home or being unemployed.  For those that usually maintain a healthy lifestyle, the pandemic is definitely changing weight loss routines and workout regimes but help is on the way.  Affectionately referred to as “COVID Curves” or “Quarantine 15”, the stress of the pandemic has caused many to battle with weight gain.  Severe obesity increases the risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome known as ARDS.  ARDS is a serious complication of COVID-19.

Many are searching for strategic methods to slim down to become healthier these days.  From in home workouts to outdoor gym classes; there is a way.  Dr. Rameck Hunt specializes in obesity medicine and reports that “unfortunately with no end in sight we can’t wait to get to a healthier weight until after the pandemic is over because it will be many more months.”  He urges people to begin with the four pillars of weight management:

  1. Get into the mindset of change to get to a healthier weight;
  2. Start a low carb diet with the “No Guess Work” plan;
  3. Increase your physical activity; and
  4. If needed, consider medication or surgery.

We know that some things are easier said than done.  However, changing your mindset invites positive results.  Dr. Hunt is the creator of the unique diet plan known as “No Guess Work”.  This resourceful guide is one strategic way to manage your “Quarantine 15” and beyond.  Here are 5 key factors that Dr. Hunt involves within his unique plan:

  • Finding your individualized carb number that allows you to lose 1-2 lbs per week.
  • A low-carb Mediterranean diet which has been shown to be best for heart health.
  • N.E.A.T: non exercise activity thermogenesis; in which we teach the reader to maximize their physical activity to burn the most calories as they can in addition to what they do with exercise.
  • O.S.C.C:One Simple Consistent Change is where I developed this concept to get people started on their journey. Everything is connected to at least 4-5 other things. If you focus on changing one thing in a positive direction it will drag (or change) the 4-5 other things that are connected to it. So being consistent and focusing on changing one thing will positively change the other things connected to it.
  • Understanding the concept that weight loss is not just about willpower. Understanding that your body has a set point for your weight and will fight to get you back to your set point (What your body perceives as normal) when you try to lose weight is key. And since we know that and know how to combat it, will allow you to sustain your weight loss.

Weight loss is definitely possible during the pandemic.  There are several resources to assist you on your journey.  It truly will take a village as well.  Call on your community, family and more to assist you in achieving a healthier life.  To connect with Dr. Rameck Hunt for further weight loss details, please follow him on social media as: @drrameckhunt and @noguesswork or visit his website at www.noguesswork.com.
