Changing the Hair Narrative with Nae Nae’s Naturals

Having great quality hair care products is something that every woman loves to have. Being able to properly care for your natural hair and for those in your household adds a little piece of confidence when you rock it. With skin conditions such as eczema which can cause server scalp conditions, it’s important to know your options of care and be proactive in coming up with a solution. In today’s climate, most parents are turning away from medical advice and solutions and are turning towards herbal remedies which are proven to be more effective and less harmful to the body and the skin. For Terrence and Nevadra Johnson, natural remedies were the way to go to heal the skin of their daughters. They collectively created Nae Nae’s Hair Boost as an introductory product that quickly took social media by storm. Nevadra says,

“I guess it first started off primarily my two daughters having issues with their skin. They were experiencing really eczema as well as dry skin and dry scalp. Of course, I took them to a dermatologist, and they prescribed them a lot of steroid creams and ointments that when I did research on in the long run wouldn’t be good for their skin and would thin their skin out. Because everything on the skin goes, you’re your bloodstream, I was interested in having that on my kids. I just started doing some research and at the time my husband was kind of really into herbal remedies and things like that so we went out to our local herb shop and spoke with one of the workers gave us some advice on what herbs would be effective for us to use that wouldn’t leave us with long term effects. So, I got creative and started experimenting almost becoming a little scientist (laughs,).”

Nae Nae’s is changing the narrative on how hair products are created. From the herb shop to the kitchen, this husband-and-wife team wanted to show their daughters that doctors aren’t the only solution or remedy to healing. The beauty of being an entrepreneur can often be the most tedious. A lot of business owners have created this false narrative that you have to have it all together from the very beginning and the Johnson family are proof that humble starts are the best starts, she says,

“You know what our story is really funny and it’s on our website, I never intended on doing a brand that wasn’t my motivation. I honestly didn’t even want to start this thing I just say hey I’m making this for my kids and when I started seeing the results that they were getting my husband started putting it on social media. He wanted to show their growth and skin results. People started reaching out asking us if we would make them some for their kids or for them. so, we had a discussion and he asked me if I wanted to sell it and then, in the beginning, I started giving the recipe away online and since then we have taken that video down. I think the transparency of us showing everything that was going in it and that we were making it made people feel comfortable with buying it. So, we initially kind of said Hey this is what we have, if you wanted this if you were interested in buying it and we asked everybody online like how much would you pay for this product. Everybody was like oh and if it’s all of those ingredients then we would pay $19, oh and they’re all-natural and organic oh I think like you know $45 or so. OK well, we started selling it for $45, we didn’t have this typical launch with all this effort put into it with landing pages and such. We literally did our first sell by having someone just PayPal us. So, there was no website, there was nothing it was just PayPal inside the note put your address of where we should ship and that’s kind of how we did the launch with that.

Now two years and in full operation, Nae Nae’s is shifting the natural hair journey forever.

“I want to show my children that you can really do anything that you set your mind to. It’s important that my daughters see that black women are powerful, unmovable, and filled with strength. We didn’t initially have a plan when putting out our products as I mentioned it wasn’t something that I really wanted to sell but it was something that I needed to do to help other parents in my position make sure that their daughter skin and hair would be properly cared for forever. We became a real solution. So, I want my daughters to see what hard work looks like and that you can step out at any time to create something that will change the black culture and be brave enough to go against the norm.”
