George Powell, a worship leader at Fallbrook Church and brother to American Idol Season 12 finalist Vincent Powell, has customized a special tribute to George Floyd to the tune of “A Change is Gonna Come” to honor Floyd’s life and family.
George Powell is a gifted singer, composer, pianist, and worship leader who serves as the Worship Pastor at Fallbrook Church in Houston, with a membership of 8,000. He has performed for notables such as President Barack Obama, Houston philanthropist and notable Mattress Mack, and Boyz II Men.
George Powell arranged the classic civil rights song “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke into a George Floyd version. “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke has become one of the anthems of the civil rights movement and George Powell hopes this song will honor Floyd’s life and join the movement against racial discrimination and police brutality while inspiring change and providing hope and peace to a grieving nation.

“Watching the story of George Floyd on all the news channels made me think of the song “Change Is Gonna Come.” My wife told me to record it and put it online. As I started singing it one day, the idea hit me to personalize it with George Floyd’s story. I had no idea that it would get over 250,000 views and 14,000 shares on Facebook in the first day! The music producer and engineers who helped produce this song are world class and multiple Grammy Award winners and are the best in the country. I hope this song will inspire everyone to keep fighting for change. Most of all, I pray that it will encourage the family of George Floyd.”
He was born in North Carolina…He was heaven sent…He grew up in Houston….He’s been busy every since… It’s been too hard living…But He didn’t have to die…‘Cause George Floyd didn’t hurt nobody…He was trying to comply… He didn’t want no trouble….They had him down on the ground….It was all over $20….Why did the laws even have to come around…. And I can hear him call for his mother…Saying, “mother help me please”….Cause he knew every time he called his mother….Mother would immediately get down on her knees ….He said I can’t breathe….I won’t last for long….But right now he’s resting in peace…Somehow we gotta carry on.See video here with over 2.1M views and 70k+ shares on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/111568002220123/posts/3139236206119939/?vh=e&d=n.
