Kristal Turner Childs becomes the First African American woman to be appointed as the Deputy Commissioner in the history of the Pennsylvania State Police

From Harriett Tubman to Rosa Parks, and Angela Davis, black women throughout American history have always risen to take leadership roles in society in different ways. And in 2021, the legacy continues with Kristal Turner Childs who is now the first African American woman to be appointed as the Deputy Commissioner in the history of the Pennsylvania State Police. An avid community leader who always seeks the best for others has shown the world what perseverance and tenacity get you.  In an interview with FEMI magazine, Deputy Commissioner Childs (yes it rolls off the tongue so well) talked about her journey and accomplishing the goal of becoming a pioneer in her own right.

Who would you say is Kristal Turner Childs?

I am a passionate leader.  I am a community advocate. I fight to bring light to people and issues that are overlooked. I seek to inspire, educate and create pathways for success for those who have been marginalized.

What inspired you to get into law enforcement?

I was inspired to pursue a career in law enforcement because I have a desire to right the wrongs of the world. I am a person who was traumatized by abuse, racism, and poverty. I grew wanting to shield people from pain.  I viewed law enforcement as a way to help others. Helping others brings me joy.

You seem to be accustomed to being the first in things (First to get a college degree in your family and the first black woman deputy commissioner of Pennsylvania) how does it feel?

It feels good to achieve milestones.  It also feels like unfinished business.  It’s 2021. It’s taken 116 years to become the first black female deputy commissioner.

Kristal Turner Childs

Did you envision yourself in the role?

Yes. I’ve always envisioned myself as being a competent leader.

What do you hope to bring to the position?

I will always look at my position with the mindset of keeping the community and our employees safe.  I want to give the perspective of those who haven’t always felt heard in the agency.

What advice will you give to young people?

Don’t turn your back on a career in law enforcement.  We need your perspective to evolve.  Believe in yourself when no one else does.  You are your greatest champion.
