Mako Girls consists of sisters, Mimi, A-Ni, and Kena Ochoa. Being siblings makes working together a lot of fun for the group. The girls emphasize the benefits of having your sisters there through it all. “We are always supporting each other, on and off stage. Having each other makes high-pressure times easier to go through when preparing for shows or even working long hours in the studio. One thing that really makes it special is that we get to experience this whole journey together, so each of us understands exactly what the others are going through.”
We wanted to know how the group comes together and makes the MAKO gIrls. The ladies give us a deeper look at each other’s personalities.
“The funny thing is that we all have very different personalities that bring something to the group. Kena has a very laid-back personality, yet brings the hype when we work together. She’s always open-minded, which helps when we are being creative for covers, music videos, and more.”
“A-Ni has an amazing sense of humor. She’s our jokester. When you first meet her she can be reserved, but after getting to know her, she’s a ball of energy. A-Ni is great at creating dance moves and filming our content.”
“Last but not least is Mimi. She’s very bubbly and friendly and focused, all at the same time. We consider Mimi the responsible one. She makes sure we stay on task. She is also the co-vocal coach in the studio.”
The group has recently amassed over 9 million likes on the popular app, TikTok. It’s all about finding your niche according to these ladies and providing some great tips on creating great content. “For us, people love to see dancing, singing, fashion content, sister/friend goals, and challenges. Getting a great angle is important and making sure the lighting is right. The timing of when you post also plays a part in growing your account. Finally, have fun! People can feel good energy through the screen and will continue watching your videos.”
There have been many girl groups throughout the years that have dominated and taken over the industry. We have seen the rise of Destiny’s Child and TLC from the early ’90s. These are the two of the groups that inspired the MAKO girls. “TLC because of their timeless music and how they incorporated messages in their songs. We also admire their style; you can just feel their energy when they’re on the stage. Destiny’s Child because of their strong harmonies and how they are always elevated from their previous work.”
As they are making their own way in the industry; they will leave their own legacy for their fans. “We want our fans to feel inspired to chase their dreams, have confidence in themselves, and be unapologetically who they truly are. Our music provides positive energy and feel-good vibes for people to dance to. We want our music career to impact how people see girl groups, by showing what it is to have a loving sister relationship, where we encourage each other to be our best.”
