Making a Name For Himself, One Beat at a Time, DJ Baby Face

DJ Babyface is the most recent and even youngest DJ in the State of Alabama. He began to DJ at the age of 8. He has been scheduled for nonprofit business, pop-up workshops, back to school experiences. He was recently interviewed by WVTM 13 for being the youngest DJ in Alabama.

In the month of July, he obtained an award from the Alabama Music Awards. Although he is only permitted to DJ at kid-friendly or kid-determined events, he does have many grown-ups dancing to his tunes. He’s definitely making a name for himself and even a future career!

Where did the name DJ Babyface come from?

My godmother “BB” helped pick my name, and I felt all the other DJ names were taken. She said I have a Babyface. So, we decided on “DJ Babyface.”

What made you want to become a DJ?

I was inspired when I was younger by my cousin “Glaze.” I assisted with DJing my 5th birthday party. Plus, I love music, and I love to dance.

How do you feel being so young yet helping inspire other kids your age to pursue their dreams?

It makes me feel good to inspire, and it makes me feel like a good person. It puts a smile on my face when I help others do something they didn’t know they could do.

How do you balance school and being a DJ?

I am only allowed to DJ on the weekends. In the summer, I usually have an event every weekend. This summer, I DJ for several back-to-school events throughout the state, The Walter Howlett Boys and Girls Club, city council campaign event, Alabama Music Award fun day, and private birthday parties.

Who are some DJs that you are inspired by?

My cousin DJ Glaze Brown taught me how to work for my control board. He has been helping me ever since I was five years old. I am also inspired by DJ Hype, DJ Shadow, and my God dad Stephon. My God dad has a production company, so he helps me learn how much sound to use indoor vs. outdoor, roll my cords, and take care of my speakers.

What do you enjoy most about making people feel good through music?

I love to see people dance and have a good time. When people dance, it makes them happy and free.

Who encouraged you to get started?

My mom encouraged me because she bought me my equipment for Christmas. I was always looking up how to DJ, looking at DJ videos, music, and making music on my phone. I was shocked when my mom got me the actual equipment for Christmas.

How do the kids at school treat you?

They treat me as usual because I don’t tell kids at my school. I don’t think the kids at my school care that I DJ or believe me. Very few have seen me at DJing events and have spoken to me.

What is your favorite genre of music right now to play?

My favorite music to play is Hip Hop. But I like to play all types of music.
