In Honor of Black Music Appreciation Month, We highlight the Influential Tracks that help make Cruella a Hit

Disney’s Live- Action Adaptation Film Cruella debuted on its streaming service, Disney Plus, this past Memorial Day Weekend. All I can say is the film did not disappoint. Even if you’re not a Disney fanatic like myself it’s still a pretty incredible film. The incredible storyline and performances is not the only reason I was amazed by the film. The soundtrack is also fire. On June 7th, 1979, President Jimmy Carter decreed June Black Music Appreciation Month. To recognize the musical contributions of African Americans over the years. In celebration of this musical month, I wanted to highlight some of the iconic tracks which helped bring the movie over the top. Set in the 70’s in London.

There are spoilers ahead so prepare yourself if you haven’t seen the film just yet. The film will be available to all Disney subscribers at a later date with no additional cost outside of your subscription fee.

The track was featured on her 1965 record, I put a Spell on You. The song has been featured in many cinematic moments throughout the years.

Fire- The Ohio Players

The song was released in November 1974. The group originally played the song for Stevie Wonder, who let them know that the track would be a hit. The song was the opening track from the album of the same name and hit No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100.

Car Wash- Rose Royce

Another classic that will never go out of style and you can probably hear at an alarming rate during the summer. January 29, 1977 the song hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was the group’s debut single. Also as you could have guessed by the title was the theme of the 1976 movie “Car Wash”.

Come Together and Whole Lotta Love

Tina Turner was recently just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month. Come together was released in May 1970 and Whole Lotta love was released in 1979.

I can’t even begin to express the influence that black music has made on the world. It’s great to see that these songs still play a vital role in today’s culture. We also get to show the impact that was made by black culture and how we still continue to make an impact with our music.
