FEMI Mag: I went on your Instagram page to get a feel for your personality, and a peek into your artistry. And I want you to know that you don’t sing, you sang. Your voice is so beautiful and powerful. The world deserves to know precisely who Alexia Jayy is! At what age did you discover the true power of your voice and your God-given potential to impact others through music? Can you recall what that feeling felt like?

Alexia J: I sang my first solo when I was two years old, and by the time I was five, I knew that singing was my path. That was when I first felt like I had a purpose. When I was nine, I competed in Amateur Night at The Apollo Theater in New York— and the only thing I could think was, Michael Jackson sang here. It felt absolutely amazing to be in that same place, performing on that same stage.

FEMI Mag: You have been singing since you were a young child. Looking back at some of your early performances and your overall vocal range at such an early age, I am blown away that a 9-year-old girl could have easily gone head-to-head with professional singers that were twice your age during that time. Did you receive any vocal lessons or special training?

Alexia J: Yes, my mom had vocal training— so she was able to teach me and my brother. She was an amazing vocal coach.

FEMI Mag: What inspires you as an artist?

Alexia J: My son, Matthew. It’s important to me to lead by example, and I want him to see me follow my dreams. I want to show him that—even though dreams are sometimes a long shot—you can do anything if you work hard enough.

FEMI Mag:  Your single “Who raised you?” is so intimate and raw. Listeners and can feel the emotion through your lyrics. What was your motivation behind the song? And what type of impact would you like your single “Who raised you?” to have on listeners?

Alexia J:  I was sitting in my car thinking about my personal situation, and how so many others go through the same thing. It’s not easy being a single mother…There are so many fathers who step out and don’t take responsibility; they don’t understand how their absence affects the child and the other parent— but especially the child. So, when I wrote the song, I just wanted single mothers to know that they’re not alone…there are many other women struggling with the same thing.

FEMI Mag: Tell us something about Alexia Jayy that you want our readers to know?

Alexia J: Singing is so much more than a job or a career to me— it’s my purpose. I want people to hear the love that comes from my soul and to know that I mean every word that I say.
