Cameron Brew Is Black Girl Magic

The incidents that transpired during the Summer of 2020 were moments in history that will forever live in the heads of Black men and women everywhere. Watching a Black man be killed, seeing nationwide protests and hearing young Black voices shout in solidarity for change seemed to resemble protests that we’ve seen in history books from years and years ago. It sparked a revolution and change, and 16-year-old Cameron Brew was not only left feeling low self-worth by the racial and social injustice she witnessed, but also extremely inspired and motivated to use her voice, and her platform to evoke some change. With the help of her mom, she created her own online store and fashion line, “Black, Gorgeous, and Rich”. We spoke to Cameron who spoke about her mission to empower her community and spread messages of positivity amongst young Black men and women everywhere.

What ignited your passion to start your own business?
“I just wanted to inspire young girls like me.”

How’d you come up with the name Black, Gorgeous and Rich, and what does your business specialize in?
“A conversation came up with my mom about how dark-skinned girls were perceived versus light-skinned girls, and my mom told me that dark-skinned girls were just as beautiful. My mom has always told me that I was black, gorgeous and rich. As for my brand, we specialize in women’s clothing. It’s about the message we’re trying to put out there. I think my brand will give Black people a sense of pride.”

As a young black girl, why is it important for other young black girls to embrace their melanin, now more than ever?
“I feel like our community needs to be empowered more than ever, because of everything that’s going on in the world. Our message encourages other young black girls that they are valuable.”

Who would you say is your biggest inspiration?
“Rhianna inspires me because of her makeup line. Seeing that she’s a beautiful black woman gives me confidence in my brand and makes me think that I could be in Rihanna’s shoes one day.”

Cameron says she and her mom are working on coming out with a men’s cologne soon. She says she’s really excited about that.
