Entrepreneurs in the DMV will have the opportunity to see a different approach to doing business this weekend as the Barter Black® Pop-Up brings business owners, vendors, and community members together for a live demonstration of modern bartering.
The event will take place Saturday, May 31, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Studio Heir in Fort Washington, Maryland. Unlike traditional marketplaces where transactions are made with cash, participants will have the opportunity to earn and spend Barter Bucks℠, a trade-credit currency used within the Barter Black® community.
Founded by entrepreneur Nicole and her team, Barter Black® was created to help small business owners exchange value, access resources, and build relationships through a system designed to extend beyond one-to-one trades.
“The purpose of this event was to show bartering happening in real time in a way that feels simple and useful,” Nicole said. “Barter Black® was created to go beyond traditional bartering where two people have to directly swap items or services. Instead, we use trade credits called Barter Bucks℠ inside our community.”
The pop-up aims to provide a hands-on look at how the system works. Participants can offer products or services, earn Barter Bucks℠, and then use those credits with other vendors and entrepreneurs participating in the event.
“This gives people a chance to see how they can offer their products or services, earn Barter Bucks℠, and then use those credits to get something they need from another business owner in the community,” Nicole explained.
As economic uncertainty continues to impact many small businesses, organizers say the event highlights an alternative way for entrepreneurs to access goods and services while expanding their professional networks. Supporters of bartering systems argue that they can help preserve cash flow, foster collaboration, and strengthen local business ecosystems.
For many attendees, the event will serve as both a networking opportunity and a chance to explore a business model that prioritizes community support.
“The goal is to show what it looks like when entrepreneurs support each other through a shared system where everyone can win,” Nicole said. “It’s about building a community where businesses help each other grow, not compete against each other.”
The event is part of National Barter Black® Day, an initiative that encourages entrepreneurs to explore collaborative approaches to business growth while circulating resources within their communities.
