Morris Museum of Art Presents Gail Wegodsky: Recent Paintings—Libraries as Sanctuaries in a Digital Age

The Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Georgia will present Gail Wegodsky: Recent Paintings from January 10 through April 12, 2026. Opening January 2, 2026, the exhibition showcases a compelling body of photo realistic paintings that center on libraries as architectural spaces and cultural sanctuaries. Through her precise and immersive approach, Gail Wegodsky elevates these environments beyond their physical structures, portraying them as quiet refuges of knowledge and reflection within an increasingly fast paced digital world.

Wegodsky is widely recognized for her extraordinary attention to detail and her ability to create interiors that feel both intimate and psychologically resonant. Her paintings often feature solitary figures deeply engaged in reading or contemplation, moments that encourage viewers to pause and reflect on the enduring role libraries play as protectors of shared wisdom. In these works, libraries emerge not simply as buildings, but as living spaces shaped by patience, memory, and the quiet pursuit of understanding.

The artist’s meticulous and time intensive painting process mirrors the very values these spaces represent. Each canvas becomes a visual meditation on focus and sustained attention, offering a sense of calm and inwardness amid the constant noise of contemporary life. By rendering these interiors with such care, Wegodsky invites viewers to slow their gaze and reconnect with the rhythms of learning and reflection.

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Wegodsky earned her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and her MFA from the Tyler School of Art. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at institutions such as the LaGrange Art Museum, Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, and the Greenville County Museum of Art, and is included in numerous public collections, including that of the Morris Museum of Art. She has received national recognition through awards from the Art Renewal Center, Artists Magazine, and Oil Painters of America, and was a winner of the New American Paintings Open Studios Competition. Wegodsky lives and works in Atlanta and is represented by the Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte.
