Meatless Monday…Forever Maybe?

Who doesn’t like a good fried chicken sandwich? Or what about some gooey cinnamon rolls? Two hands up for me please! As we enter a new era of increased health consciousness, more and more people are looking to add more meat free options into their diets. According to the Mayo Clinic “A plant-based diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, legumes and nuts, is rich in fiber, vitamins and other nutrients. And people who don’t eat meat — vegetarians — generally eat fewer calories and less fat, weigh less, and have a lower risk of heart disease than non-vegetarians do.” That sounds like a perfect reason to ditch the processed meat and add a few vegan meals into your diet.

Now, you don’t have to go full vegan, but if you’re curious about the vegan lifestyle, here are two black-women owned spots to try:

Underground Vegan

Underground Vegan is an amazing food truck (soon to be brick and mortar) spot in Birmingham, Al and the surrounding areas. Their menu consists of vegan “chicken” sandwiches and po’boys. Go ahead and order “The Dirty Bird”; their signature sandwich with their house made fried “chicken”, coleslaw, pickle and signature v sauce on a pretzel bun. Sounds amazing right? Well I can guarantee that it is; you’ll definitely forget that you’re not eating meat. They sell out just about everywhere they go, so be sure to follow their social media to get the scoop on their locations for the week, and get there early.

The Veggie

Looking for vegan comfort food? Thinking about dipping your toe into the vegan pool? Need a Vegan caterer? Then Chef Adyre at “The Veggie” has you covered! From her delicious (and I mean delicious), cinnamon rolls, to a fried “shrimp” po’boy, or “The Soul Bowl”; which is filled with mac and cheese, collard greens, black eyed pea salad and yellow cornbread (excuse me while I wipe the drool from my lip.), there is sure to be something for everyone.

If you’re still skeptical, you can get her “24 Hour Vegan” package and decide for yourself. I have personally had the cinnamon rolls more than once, and I may or may not have eaten 3 in one day. (Hey, don’t judge, order some for yourself and then get back to me about how many you eat!) The Veggie offers delivery to Huntsville, Al and areas within a 25-mile radius, and her cinnamon rolls ship nationwide (so there really isn’t an excuse to not try these).
