November is National Entrepreneurship Month in the United States, a time dedicated to honoring the leaders who choose courage, creativity, and resilience as they build solutions that move communities forward. Among those shining in both service and innovation is Dr. Nekaiya Jacobs Pratt, affectionately known as Kay, a board-certified pediatric critical care physician, educator, and health equity advocate based in Chicago.
As a physician at Advocate Children’s Hospital, Dr. Jacobs Pratt is deeply committed to improving outcomes for critically ill children while championing compassionate, inclusive care. Her expertise in pediatric neuro-critical care and traumatic brain injury has helped shape lifesaving approaches to pediatric stroke response and recovery. Her impact reaches far beyond the hospital walls as she serves as a mentor, author, and entrepreneur, creating pathways that merge medicine, wellness, education, and representation. Through initiatives such as the Curly Hair Care Initiative and her physician-led practice, Tone & Texture Aesthetics and Wellness, she empowers both youth and adults to embrace identity, confidence, and well-being.

When reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey, Dr. Jacobs Pratt emphasizes the importance of courage in the face of doubt. She believes in starting even when fears linger, explaining that meaningful dreams rarely come wrapped in certainty. Rather than waiting to feel ready, she encourages aspiring leaders to embrace the unknown and trust that growth unfolds along the way. Fear does not signal a lack of readiness; often, it simply confirms that something meaningful is underway.
Her inspiration springs from women who lead boldly with authenticity. She looks to influential figures such as Emma Grede and Sara Blakely for their ability to build impactful brands with intention and inclusivity. She also credits journalist and author Jeanette Reyes, whose book Primed to Pivot reinforced the power of evolving and honoring new seasons in life. Just as importantly, she draws strength from fellow Black women physicians including Dr. Tanisha Hutchinson, Dr. Maya Eady McCarthy, Dr. Tisha Rowe, Dr. Mahalia Previlus, and her business partner. Their sisterhood fuels her vision and desire to create spaces that uplift others.
Dr. Jacobs Pratt proudly celebrates two defining achievements in her entrepreneurial path. Publishing her first children’s book allowed her to pour joy, confidence, and representation into young readers. Opening the first location of Tone & Texture Aesthetics and Wellness created a sanctuary where patients can embrace healing, self-care, and beauty in an environment grounded in inclusivity. For her, the journey has always been about elevating others, whether at a hospital bedside or through creative and wellness-centered work that builds community.
As we recognize the innovators driving progress during National Entrepreneurship Month, Dr. Nekaiya Jacobs Pratt stands as a powerful testament to purpose-centered leadership. Her mission reflects a belief that entrepreneurship is not only about ideas and ambition; it is about service, compassion, and opening doors for the next generation. Her impact continues to remind us that when passion meets purpose, entire communities rise.
