Dr. Letisha Jefferson is redefining what it means to care for children. A board-certified pediatrician with over a decade of clinical experience, she’s not only trusted in exam rooms but also in the pages of picture books and classrooms alike. As an award-winning children’s author and wellness advocate, Dr. Jefferson merges medical expertise with a nurturing, relatable voice that speaks to both children and their families.
Her debut book, Zoe’s Day with Dr. J, was born from a desire to make pediatric visits less intimidating for young patients. “My inspiration came from years of seeing children walk into my office with fear and anxiety,” she says. “As a new mother myself, I began reading countless children’s books and realized how powerful storytelling could be in shaping a child’s mindset.” Zoe’s Day with Dr. J introduces children to the checkup experience through the eyes of a bright, curious young girl, transforming a routine visit into an opportunity for empowerment, learning, and courage.

More than just a story, the book acts as a resource for parents and a bridge between the healthcare world and early literacy. With its vibrant illustrations and conversational tone, it walks kids through common doctor’s office moments—like height checks and vaccines—while encouraging them to ask questions and name their feelings. “It’s both a literary and emotional toolkit,” Dr. Jefferson explains, “because helping a child feel seen and prepared can change how they show up in all areas of life.”
Her advocacy doesn’t stop at the page. Dr. Jefferson serves on the board of the Early Learning Coalition of Duval and the nonprofit ScienceSiS, and is an active volunteer with Read USA and Reach Out and Read. Through these organizations, she champions health equity, literacy access, and science education for underserved children. Her company, Learn and Play with Dr. J, continues this mission by creating hands-on, educational resources that connect health, play, and learning in meaningful ways.
Despite wearing many hats—doctor, author, mother, entrepreneur—Dr. Jefferson is grounded by the belief that balance is not only possible but essential. “As a physician, entrepreneur, and mom, balance is essential to my well-being,” she shares. “I maintain it by setting boundaries, prioritizing what matters most, and giving myself grace. Some days are about business goals, others are about movie nights or unplugged time with my family—and both are equally important.”
What resonates most about Dr. Jefferson’s journey is her authenticity. She is candid about the challenges of juggling multiple roles while continuing to grow and evolve. “My story reflects real moments of struggle, perseverance, and purpose,” she says. “I continue to work on balancing a demanding medical career, motherhood, being a supportive wife, and the creative journey of publishing a book. I hope my path inspires others to pursue their calling and goals—even if they’ve ‘made it.’”
In every exam room she enters, every story she writes, and every child she champions, Dr. Letisha Jefferson is planting seeds of courage, curiosity, and care. And through Zoe’s Day with Dr. J, she reminds families everywhere that wellness starts with understanding—and that every child deserves to feel safe, seen, and celebrated.
