In the ever-evolving landscape of digital media, Black Girl Narrative stands out as a beacon of innovation and empowerment. Co-founded by DeLisha Tapscott, Ed.D., and Nardos Ghebreab, Ph.D., this platform has always celebrated the intricacies of Black womanhood. With its newly updated digital presence, Black Girl Narrative merges rigorous research with heartfelt storytelling, creating a dynamic space for Black women and digital innovators alike. As the platform prepares for its official launch in May 2025, we sat down with the founders to discuss their journey, inspirations, and the future of Black Girl Narrative.
What was the inspiration behind Black Girl Narrative?
Black Girl Narrative was born from a seed planted during my doctoral program. Initially, it took shape as Black Superwoman Chronicles, a space for Black women to share art, writing, and community. After facing racism in academia, the project was paused, but the idea never left me. In September 2024, I posted a survey on misogynoir and digital harm, receiving over 2,000 responses from Black women. This overwhelming response, coupled with the aftermath of the November 2024 election, reignited the vision. Nardos and I realized that Black Girl Narrative had to exist—not just as a storytelling platform, but as a space for protection, reflection, and collective power.
Do you believe in work-life balance? If so, how do you maintain it?
Absolutely, but we believe in redefining it. For us, balance is about setting boundaries and being mindful of our capacity. Some days, this means having full calendars; other days, it means logging off without guilt. Our work is centered around care, and we strive to practice what we preach, even if imperfectly.
Who is your business role model, and why?
We draw inspiration from women like Whitney Alese, Gia Peppers, Alex Elle, and Aja Monet. These women lead with truth, creativity, and care, never diluting their message for palatability. They remind us that integrity and boldness can coexist.
What would attract listeners to your personal story?
We’re not offering perfect stories—we’re offering honest ones. Our narrative includes the daily texts during challenging doctoral seasons, the reckoning with burnout, and the joy that still found us. Our story resonates because it’s unfiltered and full of feeling, faith, and the courage to begin again.
As Black Girl Narrative prepares to launch, it promises to be a unifying hub where creativity, academic insight, and lived experiences converge, documenting history and empowering its community to shape the digital future.
