For over three decades, Richard Glass has transformed hair into works of art, creating iconic looks for celebrities, Red Carpet events, and major productions. From his first official job with Debbie Allen to working with Faith Evans, Richard has built an illustrious career defined by creativity, elegance, and a deep love for his craft. FEMI Magazine sat down with Richard to learn more about his journey and insights.

Share your origin story with us—how did you begin your hairstyling career?

Growing up as the second eldest of six children, with five sisters, I naturally started helping them with their hair. Their friends noticed and began asking me to do their hair as well. Before I knew it, word spread and I became the go-to hairstylist in my circle. My large hands, perfect for blow-drying and straightening, made me a natural.

How would you describe your signature hairstyling aesthetic?

I’d call it “functional beauty.” I’m deeply inspired by the timeless glamour of 80s and 90s red carpet icons.

What goes into preparing a client for a major Red Carpet moment?

The process always begins with a consultation. I work closely with the client to understand the look they want to convey and ensure it’s practical for the event. The style must last through the red carpet and the festivities that follow.

Can you share a particularly memorable moment in your career?

My first official job was unforgettable—creating wigs for Debbie Allen’s adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, titled Pearl. Being trusted by such a legend to contribute to her project was a magical moment.

What was it like working with high-profile clients? Any memorable experiences?

One standout experience was touring with Faith Evans and doing her makeup in Antigua. Being part of her glam squad allowed me to witness and share in the magic of her journey. Another highlight was creating Lori Petty’s signature hair color for Orange is the New Black.

How has the hairstyling industry evolved, and what trends are you drawn to?

The 90s are making a comeback, and I’m thrilled about it. I love reviving the layered looks of that era but with my own “glasstastic” twist.

Is there a photoshoot or feature that stands out in your career?

My first magazine cover with Garcelle Beauvais in 2000 holds a special place in my heart—it was my introduction to lace front wigs and a proud moment for my family. Another milestone was being featured in Oprah’s O Magazine. Collaborating with brands like Redken, Vidal Sassoon, and Joico has also been a dream come true.

Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re excited about?

I have a few exciting television projects in the pipeline with some of my favorite clients. While I can’t share the details yet, I’m thrilled to bring new looks to the screen soon.

Richard Glass’s passion for hairstyling and his ability to evolve with the industry has solidified his status as a legend. Whether crafting Red Carpet moments or collaborating with celebrities, his work continues to inspire. We can’t wait to see what’s next from this visionary artist.
