What inspired you to become a Pilates instructor, and how has your journey been so far?
Clarissa: I became a Pilates instructor at a time when there were few people my age or those who looked like me in the industry. I was fortunate to find myself in the right place at the right time—a small studio in Dallas in 2016. Initially, my family and friends urged me to pursue a “real job,” especially since I had moved frequently as an army wife. There were many moments when I contemplated quitting for something more conventional. However, I found immense joy in how Pilates made me feel, and I loved helping others experience the same benefits. Here we are, eight years later, and I’m still going strong!
How do you incorporate mindfulness and mental wellness into your Pilates classes?
Clarissa: Pilates is inherently mindful. It’s all about being intentional and maintaining a deep connection, both physically and mentally. The practice is truly a mind-body connection, and I encourage my clients to tap into that inner awareness.
How do you adapt your teaching style to cater to different fitness levels?
Clarissa: I tailor my teaching style not just to accommodate different fitness levels but also to consider factors like the weather and the mood of my clients. I’m very attuned to the energy in the room. My ultimate goal is to help each individual feel stronger, more body-aware, and better overall by the time they leave class.
What advice would you give to someone who is new to Pilates and feeling hesitant to join a class?
Clarissa: If you’re feeling hesitant, I recommend bringing a friend along—at least you’ll have someone to share the experience with! On a more serious note, I suggest checking out the instructor’s or studio’s social media. Observing their approach can help you decide if it aligns with your personality and comfort level.
How do you stay motivated and continue your own fitness journey as an instructor?
Clarissa: My motivation stems from my desire to be the best instructor I can be. I firmly believe in practicing what I preach, and I maintain a disciplined routine. This discipline is key to staying motivated and engaged in my own fitness journey.
In what ways do you see Pilates benefiting children’s physical and mental health?
Clarissa: Pilates offers significant benefits for children, both physically and mentally. It enhances their mobility, stamina, and problem-solving skills. I emphasize problem-solving because when kids encounter a movement they struggle with, they learn to analyze why they’re unable to do it yet. For younger children, Pilates can also improve their attention span and overall mobility.
