Apple TV+’s Bad Monkey has quickly become a fan favorite, earning a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes just four weeks into its run. The much-anticipated return of Vince Vaughn, playing the lead role, has captivated audiences, but the show’s stellar supporting cast also plays a crucial role in its success. Among them is actress Aba Arthur, who portrays the pivotal character, Samara. Arthur, known for her work in The Color Purple and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, brings a rich depth to the series, appearing in three episodes this season.
In a recent interview, Aba Arthur shared her experience working alongside Vaughn and how his energy influenced her time on set. “He is such a lovely human being. Talent unmatched. I have heard the term ‘comedic genius’ used before, but I witnessed it in real time watching him work,” Arthur explained. “He is present, focused, clear, kind, and hilarious. Working alongside someone like him forces you to elevate.” It’s clear that Vaughn’s magnetic presence elevated the performances of those around him, creating an inspiring environment on set.
Arthur’s character, Samara, has a significant story arc that intertwines deeply with the show’s central narrative. Preparing for the role was no small feat for the actress, who took the responsibility of portraying a Bahamian woman very seriously. “It means the world! I have the utmost respect for Bahamian people. To prepare for this role, I studied with Bahamian dialect coaches as well as taking a deep dive into the culture,” she said. “The familial aspect of my character Samara’s journey is an important part of her arc. The evolving relationship with her brother Neville is explored throughout the season.”
The care Arthur took to honor the culture and background of her character has not gone unnoticed by viewers, many of whom have related to Samara’s personal struggles and growth. Arthur is thrilled by this connection, saying, “It has been quite intriguing hearing how people are able to relate to her story. I take that as a great compliment.”
With Bad Monkey receiving such glowing reviews, Arthur reflected on what it means to be part of a critically acclaimed show. “What a dream. When I was a child, I was obsessed with television… I love the art of storytelling. When it is done well, the stories and characters stay with you,” she shared. The blend of excellent writing, directing, and acting in Bad Monkey has undoubtedly struck a chord with audiences, and Arthur couldn’t be happier. “To be on this show, with this story, this cast, this showrunner, and this crew – is quite literally a dream come true. I am so glad folx are watching and loving it!”
Arthur, whose résumé includes major productions like The Color Purple and Wakanda Forever, feels a deep sense of gratitude for every opportunity she gets to act. “Each production is so unique because of the vibe of the story and the people involved in telling it. I am so appreciative to work with veterans in the profession, and it is my continual prayer,” she shared. Whether on Bad Monkey or her other major projects, Arthur remains a professional on set, though she admits to fangirling in her trailer after a long day of filming.
Looking ahead, fans of Bad Monkey can expect even more riveting character development from Samara. “My character Samara’s decision-making affects the lives of many others on the show. Throughout the season, we see how those decisions play out and how she handles it all,” Arthur teased. While she didn’t offer any specific spoilers, it’s clear that Samara’s role will have lasting impacts on the storyline.
As the series continues to gain traction, Aba Arthur’s powerful performance as Samara, alongside Vince Vaughn’s charismatic return, ensures Bad Monkey will remain a must-watch for viewers. Arthur’s commitment to her craft and her love for the art of storytelling have solidified her as a rising star to watch in this standout series.
