Having been recognized as “One of 7 Independent Black Filmmakers to Watch” by Essence magazine in 2021, Watford continues his journey with a lineup of projects for 2024, spearheaded by “The Seminarian: Martin Luther King Jr. Comes of Age.”

This project draws inspiration from Patrick Parr’s 2018 book, shedding light on a lesser-known chapter of Dr. King’s history: his education at Crozier Theological Seminary. Departing from the well-known narratives of Dr. King’s later life, this biographical exploration uncovers the formative years and the motivations behind his pursuit of divinity studies.

Fascinated by this compelling topic, Lawrence “LAW” Watford, along with his production company Divine Write Pictures, secured the rights to Parr’s book in 2021 and is now translating it into a limited series.

Among his other noteworthy endeavors is “Shadow Acting,” a high-visibility short film set to grace film festivals across the country in the upcoming winter and spring seasons. Completed in the summer of 2023 and officially released in January 2024, the film examines the intricacies of interpersonal relationships, delving deep into the meaning of love in today’s world amidst conflicting social, traditional, and cultural norms.

Later in the year, Watford presents “Your Guide Home,” offering an intimate portrayal of Coprice Jones, CEO and founder of Serenity Services, renowned as “The Death Doula” for her compassionate hospice and end-of-life care in the Chicago area.

Collaborating with partners Jack Manning III and Tiffany Elle Burgess at Tyler Street Films, Watford is also in the process of developing an HBCU (Historic Black College Universities) TV series.

Watford’s journey into filmmaking began at Hampton University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science, followed by a master’s degree in communications from Regent University. His educational journey provided opportunities to work with industry stars like Pat Morita and James Avery.

Post-education, Watford contributed to various productions, including “Revolutionary Road” and “The Good Shepherd,” directed by Robert DeNiro. He spent five seasons in the art department for “Law & Order: SVU.”

Balancing his involvement in others’ projects, Watford continues to nurture his creative endeavors, including the self-produced and directed short film “The Savior & The Samaritan” (2013) and “Flipped” (2018). His recent work, “Catharsis,” scrutinizes accountability in law enforcement, earning acclaim at several festivals and securing a place in the Revolt TV collection.
