He grew up in Washington, D.C. as the youngest son of a white family. He recalls many moments of racism and bullying throughout his childhood, but he found joy performing for his family as early as the age of four. He booked his first job as a comedian at a strip club in 1986. The next year, he won a competition at the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem. The following years after, Tommy found himself performing shows with the likes of\u00a0Richard Pryor<\/strong>,\u00a0Eddie Murphy<\/strong>, and\u00a0Robert Townsend<\/strong>. In 1990, he would become an original cast member of the groundbreaking hip hop sketch comedy show,\u00a0In Living Color<\/em>. He went on to appear in television shows and films like\u00a0Martin, Strictly Business, Booty Call<\/em>,\u00a0Bamboozled<\/em>, and\u00a0Juwanna Mann<\/em>. In 2001, he brought the animated Oscar Proud to life, voicing the character on Disney\u2019s\u00a0The Proud Family.\u00a0<\/em>He released his autobiography in January 2020, detailing his struggles with identity, addiction, and his climb to fame.
