As an executive producer and showrunner with a powerhouse resume that includes Friends, Criminal Minds, Law & Order, the Emmy-winning The Crossover on Disney+, and Hulu\u2019s Washington Black, she\u2019s been shaping iconic television moments for years. <\/p>\n\n\n

But now, with her debut novel Beyond the Paddock<\/a>, Kimberly is flipping the script again\u2014this time bringing her voice to the page with a story that feels urgent, raw, and unapologetically bold.<\/p>\n\n\n

At its core, Beyond the Paddock is more than a coming-of-age novel\u2014it\u2019s a collision of two starkly different worlds: the underground grit of street racing and the polished perfection of elite show jumping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs a Black woman navigating spaces that weren\u2019t built with me in mind, I poured a lot of those feelings into these characters, <\/strong>Julian and Cameron Taylor.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wanted to challenge the idea of where Black boys are \u2018supposed\u2019 to belong,\u201d she shares. \u201cStreet racing and show jumping might look like opposites, but they\u2019re both about freedom, control, and survival.\u201d That desire to explore Black boyhood beyond the expected is the engine driving this story, and it doesn\u2019t let up. These boys are running from more than the law. They\u2019re running toward a version of themselves they never knew existed.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kimberly\u2019s ability to write from a place of lived truth is what gives Beyond the Paddock its heartbeat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve experienced that tension between where you come from and where you\u2019re trying to go,\u201d <\/em>she admits. \u201cAs a Black woman navigating spaces that weren\u2019t built with me in mind, I poured a lot of those feelings into Julian and Cameron.\u201d Their emotional evolution is personal, and it shows. The boys\u2019 guardian, Reign, is far from a picture-perfect mentor. She\u2019s sharp, reluctant, and emotionally bruised. But as Kimberly puts it, \u201cSometimes showing up\u2014even messily\u2014is more powerful than having all the answers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

The authenticity of both the street and the show ring is no accident. Kimberly did her homework, from talking to riders and trainers to pulling from her own son\u2019s competitive equestrian experiences. Even the details of the foster care system\u2014something close to her heart\u2014are handled with the kind of care and accuracy that makes this novel more than fiction. It\u2019s a mirror, a challenge, and in many ways, a love letter to every kid who\u2019s ever been told they don\u2019t belong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if there\u2019s one message Kimberly hopes lands loud and clear, it\u2019s this: \u201cWorth isn\u2019t defined by zip code, background, or how someone looks. Breaking barriers starts with believing you belong.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Beyond the Paddock, success doesn\u2019t come wrapped in a neat bow. The ghosts of the past aren\u2019t just referenced\u2014they ride shotgun. But that\u2019s the power of Kimberly\u2019s pen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
