When ESPN\u2019s Full Court Press returned for its highly anticipated second season, it brought with it the powerhouse storytelling of producer Sia Savvy<\/a>. A dynamic force in film and television, Savvy joined the production to amplify the voices of rising stars in women\u2019s college basketball\u2014and she\u2019s proving that passion and purpose can be a winning formula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSeason One was a breakout success,\u201d Savvy recalls. \u201cIt showcased the momentum building in women\u2019s sports. So, when Nikki Spetseris, the showrunner and director for Season Two, invited me to join forces with Hannah Beir and Suzy Beck, I didn\u2019t hesitate.\u201d For Savvy, the opportunity aligned perfectly with her mission: telling powerful, nuanced stories about women, especially in spaces where they\u2019ve long been underrepresented. \u201cTelling stories about women in sports is a passion of mine,\u201d she says. \u201cThis was the perfect opportunity to do that on a national stage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three athletes at the heart of Season Two\u2014Kiki Iriafen, Flau\u2019jae Johnson, and Hannah Hidalgo\u2014were already cast when Savvy came on board. But her influence would shape the tone and depth of the documentary\u2019s storytelling. \u201cNikki felt my storytelling style would resonate with Kiki\u2019s journey in particular,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was a fantastic collaboration, and I\u2019m proud of how all three stories unfolded. Our team was a dream\u2014talented, supportive, and fully committed to elevating these young women.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what does Savvy hope audiences take away? \u201cI want people to walk away in awe,\u201d she says. \u201cThese athletes are incredibly dedicated and resilient. Their journeys are emotional roller coasters, but they emerge stronger every time. My hope is that audiences become lifelong fans\u2014not just of the sport, but of the athletes themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Savvy\u2019s journey into film wasn\u2019t a straight line. She fell in love with storytelling through literature\u2014immersing herself in poetry and classics like Joan of Arc and Sherlock Holmes in high school. \u201cBy college, I knew I wanted to tell stories professionally,\u201d she says. Though she began in journalism, the pull of immersive, visual storytelling led her to film and screenwriting. But even then, the path wasn\u2019t without detours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI got a bachelor\u2019s in media management, then an MBA in finance because I wasn\u2019t sure TV production could sustain me. I worked in corporate America for a while\u2014as an accountant and project manager\u2014but my heart was always with storytelling.\u201d Eventually, she took a leap of faith, leaving corporate life to produce full-time. \u201cThose early years gave me a different kind of foundation. They taught me how to connect with people and how to ask the right questions: What resonates? How can this reflect real life? That corporate background actually made me a better producer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Savvy, every project starts with a single truth: the story is everything. \u201cI ask: What\u2019s the narrative arc? Who needs to hear this story, and why now?\u201d she explains. \u201cOnce I have that clarity, I build from there\u2014through scheduling, team building, casting, and eventually production. The vision always comes first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest challenges she\u2019s faced is striking the balance between sustainability and passion. \u201cSometimes, I take projects that pay well but don\u2019t align with my creative voice. Other times, I hold out for something like Full Court Press, which was a joy to work on. It\u2019s a constant balancing act\u2014doing what you need to do, while staying patient for what truly excites you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like many in her field, Savvy has been reshaped by the changing media landscape. \u201cYouTube, social media, and independent streaming platforms have transformed everything,\u201d she notes. \u201cYou no longer need a big studio to reach your audience\u2014you can build one yourself. That kind of freedom has pushed me to be more innovative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her advice for aspiring producers is clear and empowering: \u201cTry everything. Don\u2019t box yourself in\u2014whether it\u2019s scripted TV, unscripted reality, or documentaries. Versatility is the key to longevity. And if something scares you or pushes you out of your comfort zone, say yes. That\u2019s how you grow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With an unwavering voice, a heart for authenticity, and an eye for powerful narratives, Sia Savvy continues to leave her mark\u2014one story at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
