Dawn L. Brown<\/a>, President and CEO of EmpowHer<\/a> Institute, leads an LA-based nonprofit dedicated to empowering young women, ages 11\u201318, from underserved communities. Since 2020, Dawn has expanded EmpowHer\u2019s mission to break generational cycles through holistic, youth-centered programming focused on education, training, and mentorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Journey to EmpowHer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dawn\u2019s upbringing in Washington, D.C., shaped her passion for social activism. Raised by a single mother in a housing project plagued by violence, she found strength through her mother\u2019s dedication and an influential teacher who introduced her to the civil rights movement. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater and a master\u2019s in Drama Therapy from NYU, Dawn discovered her purpose while working as a program manager for a nonprofit. \u201cThis is heart work for me,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m nurturing girls who look like me to become powerful changemakers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five Programs Driving Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

EmpowHer Institute operates five core programs:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 EmpowHer Girl\u2019s Academy<\/a> \u2013 A school-based program for 7th and 8th graders focused on social-emotional learning, confidence-building, and financial literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 EmpowHer Leaders Academy<\/a> \u2013 High school girls receive mentorship, leadership training, and career preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Girls to Greatness Teen Summit<\/a> \u2013 An annual event for over 600 girls, featuring workshops, career exploration, and keynote speeches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 EmpowHer E-STEAM<\/a> \u2013 A social justice-focused STEAM program offering hands-on projects, job shadowing, and scuba certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 EmpowHer Summer <\/a>\u2013 A free, five-week summer program where girls explore marine science, earn scuba certifications, and engage in environmental justice work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Power of Scuba Diving<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

EmpowHer\u2019s E-STEAM program includes scuba training to deepen girls\u2019 understanding of marine biology and build resilience. Certified participants can join a 10-day capstone project in French Polynesia with the Tetiaroa Society, studying coral reefs alongside scientists. \u201cScuba challenges them to step out of their comfort zones and gain marketable skills,\u201d Dawn explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Measurable Success<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

EmpowHer\u2019s impact is clear:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 100% of middle school participants advance to high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 100% of high school participants graduate and are accepted into college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 80% of college-bound participants pursue STEAM careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EmpowHer also tracks improved classroom behavior and increased aspirations for higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mentorship as a Cornerstone<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

EmpowHer recruits 150 volunteer mentors through partnerships and outreach. Mentors provide monthly group sessions, guiding girls through personal and academic challenges. \u201cRepresentation matters,\u201d Dawn notes. \u201cWhen girls see successful women in their fields, it confirms that they can achieve their goals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
