A Ride for Representation\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The sound of clippers buzz as the chit-chat of barbers melds together. Julian and Cameron\u00a0 Harrison get their line-up at the local barbershop, The Fade Factory in Burbank, California. The\u00a0 NBA finals are on every screen as the shop cheers distract us from the lingering scent of barbicide.\u00a0 The boys dap up Jorge, who has been behind the fresh fades for the past few years. He takes off their capes \u2013 exposing Julian and Cameron\u2019s khaki pants, crisp white shirts, blazers, and ties.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a short drive to the venue, where the boys exit the SUV and make their way towards the arena\u2026\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know what you\u2019re probably thinking, these boys are about to step onto a football field or onto the hardwood. Truth is, they\u2019re about to mount their 1500-pound thoroughbreds and head into the show jumping ring. But before they head in, they\u2019re reminded in my eyes that they\u2019ve\u00a0already won. They\u2019re breaking barriers and redefining expectations just by being in the ring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And\u00a0for me, that\u2019s the biggest win..<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

It’s been four years since Julian and Cameron had their first lessons during the pandemic and not\u00a0 much has changed in their routines. Every morning, they still hit the treadmill to burn off their\u00a0ADHD energy\u00a0and spend coun<\/span>tless hours at the barn afterward. Not only because of their passion for these majestic animals, but more importantly, for the culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, the boys have had few people to look up to that look like them. Needless to say,\u00a0 Julian and Cameron take pride in being that representation for other aspiring young equestrians like them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this evolution of young boys to horseman couldn\u2019t have been achieved alone. It\u2019s\u00a0due in part to their four-legged partners and best friends who help hold the boys accountable.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n

Ensuring that they show up every day to take care of their 1500-pound friends. It isn\u2019t easy, but the special bond they share with their horses has played an integral part in shaping their character as both riders and young black men representing their sport and their community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They say it takes a village and the boys are beyond grateful to have an entire equestrian community behind them; from their trainers, to the grooms, to the countless individuals who continue to help shape their equine journey \u2013 this is only just the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So heels down, chin up \u2013 it\u2019s going to be one helluva ride! <\/p>\n\n\n
